Justin Herbert is living the good life with fiancée Madison Beer, but he needs to start focusing on winning silverware with the Los Angeles Chargers because experts like ‘Mad Dog’ Chris Russo are losing their patience with him. Until then, Russo wants football fans to stop considering Herbert a top NFL quarterback.

Herbert received the seventh first-place vote from NFL coaches, executives, and scouts in the 2026 quarterback tier list. He was ranked higher than last season’s Super Bowl finalist, Drake Maye, while Sam Darnold, who won it all, didn’t even break into the top 10.

This list drew a lot of criticism, especially for Herbert, who has not been prolific in the playoffs. Russo teased that Herbert has yet to justify the Chargers drafting him 6th overall in 2020.

Russo ranted on the latest segment of ESPN’s First Take:

[Herbert’s] last two playoff games in Houston through five picks… Unbelievably horrific. And I understand the tackles are hurt. Lewis will get into that last year in New England, but he was terrible on that Sunday night game. Two big playoff games. He didn’t show up. They don’t have a home-field advantage. I’m not so sold that he is going to be as good as he thought he was going to be, say two or three years ago.

After spending six seasons in the league, Herbert stands at a 52-43 regular-season record with three trips to the playoffs. However, he has nothing to show for it. He’s 0-3 in January football. Last season, the Chargers were pitted against the New England Patriots in the wildcard round. Herbert took six sacks, lost a fumble, and threw zero touchdowns in a 16-3 defeat.

Former NFL player blasts Justin Herbert for not living up to his high standards

Herbert had two winning seasons before the Chargers appointed Jim Harbaugh as the new head coach. Under Harbaugh, the Chargers qualified for the playoffs in consecutive years.

Herbert posted 11 wins on both occasions while throwing 49 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. But the postseason blues continued with losses against the Texans and the Patriots.

Former NFL player Gerald McCoy echoed Chris Russo’s words while talking about Herbert on First Take.

This just falls in line with more excuses [we’re] making for Justin Herbert. If he needs time, that’s fine. But every time y’all get a chance, stop going to the mountain top and screaming ‘He’s a top five talent. Top five talent doesn’t make you a top five quarterback.

NFL analyst rips Justin Herbert and Madison Beer’s very public romance

With the training camp in full swing, players are grinding hard to book a spot in the final 53-man roster. Herbert doesn’t have that sort of tension to deal with. He will start for the Chargers once the new season rolls out.

In the meantime, fans got the chance to see Herbert romancing with his fiancée and singer Madison Beer at the training ground. FOX Sports analyst and staunch Chiefs supporter Nick Wright called out Herbert by drawing parallels with Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his wife, Grammy winner Taylor Swift. Wright said on First Things First:

What is this? Listen, I understand everyone wants to be Travis and Taylor. I get it. I don’t blame you. They never did this at the practice field. What is happening here?… You can’t have more videos of your girlfriend fixing your hair than playoff wins when you’re in the league for seven years.

Herbert and Beer started dating in 2025. They announced their engagement on July 28, 2026.
