On Friday, Scottie Scheffler reminded the world why he is the World No.1 golfer. The American international tied the course record at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, with a historic round of 61 at the St. Jude Championship.

This year, Scheffler once again finished top of the FedEx Cup standings before the playoffs. After an opening-round score of 2-under 68, he scorched the course in the 2nd round.

He started with 5 straight birdies on Friday. Within the first five holes, he was 5-under par for the day. After a par on the 6th hole, he carded his 6th birdie of the day on the 7th hole.

On the par-3 8th hole, he had his first hiccup of the day, making a bogey. He shot 30 on the front nine and put everyone else in the field on notice.

On the back nine, Scheffler continued to roll. He made 5 birdies and 1 bogey to go 4-under on the back nine, with his only real trouble coming on the 12th hole, where he found the pond and had to settle for a bogey.

He thus finished the second round with a score of 61. This performance saw him match the course record and open up a 3-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard.

This is the 22nd time that Scheffler has an outright lead/co-lead after 36 holes. It is also just the 4th time he is leading an event on the PGA Tour after 2 rounds with 3 or more shots. He ended up winning on each of the 3 occasions before.

Last year, he finished 3rd at this event before winning the BMW Championship next week with an incredible comeback. He wrapped up the playoffs by finishing 4th in the Tour Championship at Atlanta.

Scottie Scheffler claims his second round was one of his best starts on the PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler got hot on Friday. The 4-time major champion fired 11 birdies and finished with a score of 61 in the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. After the round, he claimed this was one of his best starts on the PGA Tour.

In the past few years, Scheffler has been on top of the game. He has produced some incredible rounds and stunned the sporting world with his performances.

On Friday, he just missed out on a sub-60 round in golf. His 9-under par round saw him jump to the top of the leaderboard and open up a 3-shot lead.

While speaking with the reporters, he stated that his start in the second round was a “dream start” and one of the “best starts” he has ever had on the Tour.

It’s like you always want to try to get off to a good start. I was able to do that today. Really just a dream start. Probably one of the best starts I’ve had on Tour, to be honest with you. I couldn’t tell you a time where I’ve been lower early in the round.

Scottie Scheffler told the reporters

This performance from Scheffler comes at a time when some would say his game has not been at its best. In 17 starts this year, he has 11 top-5 finishes, 5 runner-up finishes and 1 win, which came during his season debut.

This year did see him struggle a bit at the start. In 3 successive events, the golfer would have a tough opening round before bouncing back in the later rounds. This season also saw his cut streak of 78 come to an end as he missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open.

Now he finds himself at the top of the standings. Given his track record of converting the lead, many fancy him getting the job done this coming Sunday before getting ready to defend his BMW Championship title next week.
