For the second straight day, players fought during the Dallas Cowboys’ joint practice session with the New Orleans Saints. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown had a heated exchange with tight end Jake Ferguson.

According to reports from Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris and Jon Machota of The Athletic, the scuffle broke out after Overshown landed a tackle on Ferguson. Ferguson retaliated by throwing the ball at the fourth-year pass rusher. Other players intervened before the situation escalated.

Harris further revealed that Overshown briefly left practice after he hit the turf. He ran along the sidelines before rejoining the action.

It’s a big year for DeMarvion Overshown

There was immense hype when the Cowboys drafted Overshown 90th overall in 2023. However, he has spent more time in rehab than playing football.

Overshown suffered an ACL tear during the Cowboys’ second preseason game in 2023 and spent his entire rookie season on the sidelines. Overshown finally made his Cowboys debut in the first game of the 2024 season against the Denver Broncos and recorded his first career sack. In the Week 13 clash against the New York Giants, he scored his first touchdown on an interception. In the following game, Overshown tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL. The Cowboys placed him on IR.

Overshown missed the first 10 games of the 2025 season. He played six games and totaled 28 tackles. So far, he has made 118 tackles, 5 sacks, four passes defensed, and one pick-6 in 19 games for the Cowboys.

In 2026, Overshown will be playing for a contract extension. So far, he has had a solid camp.

He’s doing a good job manning the huddle and doing things with the green dot … He’s flying around, and he’s accelerating his detail of the scheme and understanding offensive situations as well. We’re happy with his progress.

The Cowboys-Saints joint practice session has been chaotic

Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Cowboys-Saints joint practice erupted. According to Harris and Machota, at least six fights broke out between the Cowboys and Saints players. Edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku threw punches at Saints center Erik McCoy, which got him temporarily ejected from practice.

After practice ended, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that the session was a “little chippy.”

Not the way we like to do business. We got to be better, but I got to look at the film. We’re certainly not going to take [expletive] from anybody. It was chippy on both sides.

Schottenheimer told Cowboys beat writer Tommy Yarrish

When asked whether he would speak with Ezeiruaku about his behavior, Schottenheimer revealed that the former Boston College standout is a smart man and will learn to control his emotions better.

Donovan’s a very bright young man, and he understands that he can’t hurt the football team. And unfortunately for him, there’s two officiating crews that know that he lost his composure, but it’s part of a growth mindset for him.

Schottenheimer said

Thus far, the Cowboys have had a solid offseason camp. Sure, these fights and skirmishes help strengthen camaraderie among teammates, but if the coaching staff does not keep the players in check, it could cause unnecessary injuries. For now, the Cowboys have to pay a $500,000 fine to the NFL for their players’ actions.
