Klay Thompson is embarking on a new journey as he signed with the Miami Heat on a two-year deal. The move ends his two-year spell with the Dallas Mavericks.

There were several reports that the Mavs were open to parting ways with Thompson and were looking to trade him. But after their mutual agreement, the four-time champion bought out his Mavs contract and became a free agent.

Both Thompson and the Heat got what they wanted. The team has been actively looking to acquire shooters, while Thompson is looking to compete in the playoffs after missing out in his last two years in Dallas.

After arriving in South Beach, Thompson was all smiles and has clear plans for his arrival.

My joints just feel good being out here with this climate. I can’t wait to meet the staff, my co-workers, the executives, try new cuisines, get some really good local food, and get to work. I was always here in passing, so it’s nice to be planted, just being able to experience a great place.

Thompson had been linked to the Heat for over a month. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks in one of the biggest trades of the summer, the Heat have been actively looking for shooters.

They are building their team around their frontcourt duo of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Not only did they sign a sharpshooter, but they also signed one of the greatest shooters of all time in Thompson. His move has brought in some excitement after a couple of dull seasons.

Thompson may not be the player he once was, but he did show glimpses of his greatness last season. After an empty two-year stint in Dallas, Thompson is excited for his first stint on an Eastern Conference team.

Can the Heat compete against the Knicks and 76ers after signing Klay Thompson?

The New York Knicks will be the favorites in the Eastern Conference next season as they are the defending champions. However, many view the Philadelphia 76ers as their biggest contenders after the summer they just had. They had one of the best offseasons in recent years after trading for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James.

However, former champion Jeff Teague ranked the Heat above the 76ers and on par with the Knicks.

I told y’all the Heat was gonna be better than the Sixers. — We got Bam, Giannis, Klay, Wiggs, Mitchell, THJ off the pine, Portis off the pine. We got a nice 7. Ryan Conwell. I like Buddy too, Nikola Jovic. He ain’t bad. Don’t let Jrue Holiday get a buyout and go to Miami. We (Heat) the best team in the East, competing with the Knicks.

The Heat look like a formidable side capable of mounting a challenge next season. But it remains to be seen if the new-look team will be able to compete against the defending champions and the 76ers, who have arguably the most dominant team on paper.

The Heat are a different team with Klay Thompson

After missing out on the playoffs last season, it was clear that some big changes were needed for the Heat to compete for championships. A move for a player like Antetokounmpo moved the needle, as they probably have the best frontcourt duo in the league. Adding a veteran shooter like Thompson will make a lot of difference for this Heat team.

Former NBA player Patrick Beverley praised Thompson’s move to Miami.

Miami done found some shooting. They got one of the splash brothers coming down there. He gonna be real good down there. He likes to drive boats and sh*t. Shout out to Klay Thompson man. Miami, very different team. I seen Klay this summer he been cooking, been shooting it well. I like this move.

Optimism around Thompson’s move to the Heat is high. He’s expected to be a catch-and-shoot player, which may work wonders for him at his current age. He moved to the Mavs in the hopes of competing for a title but he may get his wish in Miami.
