Tony Romo Seemingly Blaming NFL Injuries for Alcohol Addiction Angers Fans – “Using the Tiger Woods Playbook”
Police pulled over Tony Romo after making 'unsafe' moves while driving his SUV and issued an OWI citation back in July.

Tony Romo had four years left on his $180 million contract with CBS. Then, he threw it all away after his OWI arrest a little over a month ago. Now, without a job and after contradicting statements to officers, the former Cowboys QB is facing uncertainty.
When officers pulled over the 46-year-old, he gave excuses such as visiting his grandmother. However, it was those excuses that forced CBS’ hand, and the network decided to place him on leave.
JJ Watt was lined up to replace the undrafted star with the network’s No. 1 team, and it became evident that Romo had quite a battle to return to work. Since July 23, the father of three has remained quiet about the arrest, but has now decided to publish a lengthy statement on his Instagram page.
This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely. Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.
Tony Romo wrote
The former All-Pro added that he has taught his young sons the value of accountability, hence was now doing it for his mistake. Romo reiterated that these above mentioned reasons are not excuses, but rather a way for him to find the right guidance and get better.
Fans tear into Tony Romo for blaming the NFL for lack of self-control
Even though Tony Romo did not explicitly blame his injuries for his alcohol addiction, the mere mention of it led fans to believe that the former signal caller is blaming the NFL or football in general for his condition. That, they felt, was a clear leaf out of Tiger Woods‘ playbook, who has blamed his addictions on the injuries sustained while playing golf.
Fans felt that just as the golfing legend’s recent trysts with the law show that leaning into those excuses did not pan out, they felt that Romo should do a better job than blaming it on the game he played. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Tony – drinking alcohol is a choice. Just stop. Driving while intoxicated is another choice. Just stop. The first was your problem, but the second coukd have effected others. Everyone – stop drinking and driving. It’s ridiculous if anyone gets behind the wheel impaired.

I got addicted to pain killers, because of the NFL. Naturally I relied on alcohol to stop the painkillers, … because of the NFL. Which of course led me to slamming brews with the boys on the links, because of my pain. And then I had to drive home drunk, because of the NFL.

Saying I own this completely while pleading no contest turns that entire sentence into an oxymoron

Good luck fighting the fight. Please don’t go the path of Tiger woods, blaming injuries on the sport you love. Your actions are from

Being mentally weak not physically weak. 🙏🙏
Funny. The surgeries have never harmed his ability to play golf well.

ALSO STATEMENT: "But football wrecked me, and I got hooked on pain meds because of it, and then started drinking my face off to get off the meds."
Fans understand that this was a statement Tony Romo posted only after his legal team advised him. But making excuses for one’s lack of self-control was not the way someone takes accountability.
Tony Romo’s driving privileges revoked
Tony Romo posted this statement after first pleading no contest to the OWI-first citation. TMJ4 Milwaukee reported that during that hearing, the court gave an order that will restrict the quarterback to being a passenger, at least for a while.

The court Tuesday ordered that Romo’s driving privileges be revoked for 6 months and ordered him to attend and complete an alcohol assessment program, court records show.
TMJ4 revealed
The publication added that Romo’s blood-alcohol content was .15, which is twice the legal limit. Because of those circumstances, the Wisconsin native will also be under restrictions even after he is allowed to get his driver’s license back.
An ignition interlock has been ordered to be installed in any vehicle the former QB operates, owns, or is even registered in his name for at least a year. It seems that even though he wants to return to CBS, Tony Romo has a lot of restrictions to abide by if he wants to come out of this mess without further inhibitions.
