Baker Mayfield has been known to drop a few R-rated statements in the past. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback added another to his list on Sunday.

The Buccaneers hosted the Cleveland Browns in the earlier kickoff at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs led by three points at the end of the first quarter.

On 1st & 10, Mayfield targeted rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst. But his pass was intercepted by Browns defender Myles Harden. Haden gained a few yards before Hurts tackled him to the ground.

When reporters asked Mayfield about the interception, the Pro Bowl signal caller gave a cheeky 18+ answer.

It’s no excuse, but I kind of had a little bit of a sweaty ball at that point. I’ve made that throw in practice to Ted [Hurst III] a ton of times—so at that point, just check it down, be smart. It just sucks.

The Browns swung the momentum in their favor by sacking Mayfield on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. The Browns’ defense forced him to throw multiple wayward passes. None were bigger than a couple at the end. He missed Hurst on second down and Emeka Egbuka on the fourth. The game ended, and the Browns came away with their first victory of the season.

We’re not making the plays when we need them and knowing that these are fixable things, that makes it more frustrating. We just have to get it corrected.

Mayfield completed 21 of 34 passes for 182 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He also rushed 4 times for 29 yards. He has now lost twice against his former team. In 2022, he suffered his first defeat with the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield was drafted first overall by the Browns. After four seasons, he was shipped to Carolina.

The Bucs are now 0-2. On opening day, the Bucs visited the Cincinnati Bengals. They lost 33-27. Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes for 216 yards and zero touchdowns. A couple of days after the defeat, Mayfield appeared in the media wearing a Michigan Wolverine tank top. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles made Mayfield wear it because his alma mater, Oklahoma, lost to Michigan, for whom his son, Troy Bowles, plays.

Week 3 becomes crucial for Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers

The Bucs join the Atlanta Falcons as the two NFC South teams without a victory after two games. Mayfield must turn the situation around and log a first win in Week 3, or questions will be asked about the drama regarding the contract extension in the offseason.

In Week 3, the Bucs host the Minnesota Vikings, who won their two games. Mayfield is 2-0 against the NFC North franchise in his previous two games—one with the Browns and the most recent one with the Buccaneers.

The Bucs played the Vikings on opening day of the 2023 season. Mayfield threw 21 completions for 173 yards, 2 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. The Bucs won 20-17. Overall, Mayfield has a passer rating of 77.2 with 328 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Bucs signed Mayfield during the 2023 offseason. They entrusted the former Heisman Trophy winner with the daunting task of filling the shoes of Tom Brady, who led the team to a Super Bowl victory a couple of years earlier.

Mayfield delivered consecutive division crowns. Last year, they missed the playoffs after finishing 8-9. With his contract running out, Mayfield urged the Bucs to give him an extension. After a long negotiation process, he signed a 3-year, $165 million deal days before the Cincinnati game.
