Ben Johnson’s expertise as an elite offensive player-caller was put through the wringer when the Chicago Bears had to field third-choice quarterback Case Keenum against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

Keenum, who hadn’t started a game in more than 1,000 days, played efficient football in Caleb Williams’ absence. He led the Bears to a comprehensive win over the NFC East franchise.

Controversial sports analyst Jason Whitlock praised Ben Johnson in his own unique style. In one sentence, he raved about Johnson and fat-shamed Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Johnson’s coaching was under the scanner after the Bears scored just 3 points in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson made the bold move of elevating 38-year-old Case Keenum, who last started a regular-season game in 2023, to the first-team roster.

Keenum joined the Bears around the same time as Johnson last year. So, he has had practice running the offense, at least in training. The veteran showed maturity against the Eagles at Soldier Field.

Keenum completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and scored two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He became only the sixth quarterback aged 38 or older to record such stats after Tom Brady, Drew Brees, John Elway, Doug Flutie, and Fran Tarkenton.

The Bears scored 27 points and limited the Eagles to just 7. Johnson’s team achieved that without Williams on the field. Whitlock took an unnecessary swipe at the former Heisman Trophy winner on his podcast.

[Ben Johnson] is taking the Gay out of Caleb Williams… This is amazing. Just imagine if Bill Belichick was coaching Caleb Williams. He be getting man [expletive] like Bill Belichick.

The Bears poached Johnson from the Detroit Lions, where he helped Jared Goff become a top quarterback. In his first year, Johnson turned Williams into a fourth-quarter savant.

The former Heisman Trophy winner had six game-winning drives in 2025 (more than any quarterback). Chicago also celebrated a first divisional crown since 2010. The Windy City also welcomed its first playoff victory since 2010 after defeating bitter rivals the Green Bay Packers.

With Week 3 done and dusted, Johnson has switched his attention to next week’s showdown against former Lions colleague Aaron Glenn, who currently coaches the New York Jets.

Glenn’s team is coming off a disappointing defeat against his former employers in Detroit. However, Johnson isn’t taking the challenge lightly.

Before that, he needs to sort out the quarterback conundrum. Williams bumped his hamstring and remains day-to-day, while true backup Tyson Bagent is back to full fitness. However, with Keenum delivering a stellar performance in the last game, the odds are in his favor.

Reporters asked Johnson whether he has decided who to start against the Jets on October 4. The second-year head coach teased that he knew the “direction” the Bears were heading for at quarterback.

In the meantime, Johnson wants Williams to study Keenum’s tape.

There’s a tremendous amount to be gained… seeing a big-picture lens of how the entire team was preparing, to specifically a different guy getting the keys to the car and seeing how he was going about his business and getting ready to drive it.

The Jets last played in Chicago in 2018. That game ended in a 24-10 defeat for the franchise from the Big Apple.

The Bears hold a 5-2 record at home and a 9-4 all-time record against the Jets. According to SB Nation and Yahoo Sports, the Bears are 3.5-point favorites.
