When the Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t score a point in the second half of their Week 4 clash with the Los Angeles Rams, frustration began to build. Then, when the defense couldn’t stop their opponents from doing just that, fingers pointed at Nick Sirianni.

One aspect of a team’s struggles can be blamed on the unit’s construction, health, or the coordinator coaching it. However, when two or more perform in the manner they did against the Rams, that becomes a major cause for concern.

For the past three seasons, there have been enough criticisms about the Eagles. This time, there was a clear drain of talent. But GM Howie Roseman did a good enough job, signing and drafting important replacements.

With that part out of the way, it was inevitable that the blame would come down on their head coach. He is responsible for getting his coordinators to coach the players to be their best on the field. After that disappointing second-half performance, Stephen A. Smith had this to say about Nick Sirianni:

Nick Sirianni’s in a world of trouble… At some point in time, when these complaints about you are repetitive, we need to be concerned… When you are the head coach, and you don’t know what the identity of the team is, it’s a problem.

Stephen A. Smith said

The longtime analyst reiterated on First Take that over the years, Nick Sirianni has received a lot of criticism. Sometimes, it felt overboard, considering what he has accomplished with the team.

But to hear those criticisms time and again, and for him to say that the team is ‘searching for their identity’ is a sign that the head coach does not have a clue what he is doing.

Lane Johnson retiring piles the pressure on Nick Sirianni

In Nick Sirianni‘s words, the Philadelphia Eagles are searching for an identity. That means the team as a whole is trying to figure out what they are. Moreover, it also indicates that the individual units are still figuring out how they want to play.

As Stephen A. Smith pointed out, several starters being injured can be considered an excuse. But now, that situation just got worse for the franchise after longtime offensive lineman and leader, Lane Johnson, announced his retirement.

The 36-year-old was hoping to make this season his last. But after missing the Rams game due to personal reasons, the Texas native decided that, for his mental health and his family’s sake, he could not continue.

Any mid-season retirement announcement is brutal for any organization. For a franchise that prides themselves over their depth, this might come as a huge blow, considering that its offensive line is already thin after injuries to key starters.

More importantly, this could add to the worries the offense already has. They have been slow this season. Therefore, Lane Johnson leaving midway is about to become a problem for Nick Sirianni.

Dan Orlovsky believes Eagles fans need to exercise patience

Now that Lane Johnson is gone, the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line has to regroup and figure out how to work as a unit. While discussing this on NFL Live, Dan Orlovsky said this:

This move signifies a rebuild in Philadelphia… It’s gonna take a little bit more time in Philly than probably we and their fanbase wanted.

Dan Orlovsky said

The former QB pointed out how the offensive line is now made up of recently drafted players. The same is true for the defense, after they lost quite a few veterans this past offseason.

Therefore, this Eagles team is essentially in a rebuild. The only problem is that their fans know that some of those young athletes played like superstars last season.

However, with change comes the need to adjust, and that is what the team is currently undergoing. Until then, those passionate fans might have to keep at bay their criticisms about Nick Sirianni and this team.
