LeBron James is entering his 24th season in the NBA. Following his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, James became a free agent for the fourth time in his illustrious career.

After weeks of rumors and reports, James finally joined the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal. The move surprised many, as he had no history with the city or franchise. Since then, several questions have been raised.

One of the big questions was where James would live as he came to Philly with no prior connections. Many believed that Philly as a city would not be his cup of tea. Hence, he decided to live in New York and travel to the 76ers training facility every day.

While the drive from New York to Philadelphia takes about two hours, James chose to fly by helicopter, cutting his travel time to 45 minutes. It was later reported that James would not be spending anything out of pocket due to his partnership with Fanatics, which would give him unlimited and free access to the company’s helicopter.

James shares a close relationship with Michael Rubin, who is the co-founder of Fanatics. Rubin was also a minority owner of the 76ers. Hence, speculations of a possible salary cap circumvention began to circulate.

To add fuel to the fire, Pulitzer Prize-winning ESPN journalist Pablo Torre admitted that he and his team will be looking into the matter. He even revealed that a number of NBA owners asked him to raise questions as well.

When asked about his helicopter commute with the 76ers, James gave a simple, straightforward answer.

I’ve done it before, just another way of transportation.

Based on calculations, James would have to spend roughly $800k on his travel during the season. While he may be one of the richest athletes in the world, his veteran-minimum contract does raise some doubts.

James is undoubtedly one of the, if not the, greatest players of all time. While the GOAT debate may rage on, nobody can argue against his work ethic and discipline. It may be 23 years since he made his debut, but he continues to be the face of the league to this day.

He may be well past his prime, but he showed everyone during the playoffs last season that he can still play and contribute at the highest level. As a result, several teams with championship aspirations linked him in the summer.

The King may be living 100 miles away from the Philadelphia training facility, but that has not taken a toll on his work ethic. VJ Edgecombe revealed that James turns up for training before anyone else.

He was in there before everybody, as usual.

The travel arrangement may have already drawn significant attention across the league. However, it has not compromised James’ commitment to the game.

LeBron James is going to be the alpha on the Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers are coming off a dream summer in terms of acquisitions. They kicked off their offseason by trading for Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics before signing LeBron James.

However, another big question was who would be the alpha of the team, considering they have Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and James. Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas believes that the four-time champion is going to be the alpha of the team.

In that locker room if the coach draws a play and LeBron says no, no we going to run the 1-4 me. Who the fu*k think the rest of the team is going to listen to? That coach? Or LeBron James? Then that’s the alpha. You don’t have to lead the team in scoring. But who’s going to be running the structure of the team? The best person fit for it is LeBron James.

With so many stars on the team, it will take some time for them to build some team chemistry. All of them will need to keep their egos in check for the team’s benefit. But with James in the locker room, they have some much-needed leadership and veteran experience as the 76ers look to win their first championship in 43 years.
