After parting ways with the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons, LeBron James became a free agent for the fourth time in his career. The decision sent the NBA world into a frenzy, and he surprised everyone again by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.

James is one of the most accomplished players in NBA history, if not the most. Drafted in 2003, he has cemented himself as one of the greatest players of all time and built a business portfolio over the last two decades.

After his move to Philly, reports said the King would live in New York and commute to Philly during the season. With no prior connections to the city and no family around, it made sense for James to live elsewhere.

While many have questioned his move to the 76ers, it has also raised new questions about his off-court arrangements. It was revealed that James would be commuting between the two cities via a helicopter, as it would reduce his travel time from two hours to 45 minutes.

But recent reports say he won’t be spending anything out of pocket on the helicopter travel. As part of his existing partnership with Fanatics, the company gives him free and unlimited access to the company’s helicopter. Hence, there have been talks of a possible salary cap circumvention by the 76ers, as the founder of Fanatics is a former minority owner of the franchise.

Journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre explained that his team is taking a closer look at the story.

It’s something that I also have been watching. I know that Fanatics logo. I saw that. I was also a little mad that I didn’t get to get that one first. On that story, specifically, I will say that we were very interested. And we are, of course, looking into all of the ways. That is both a good story, as well as something of interest to the league.

Torre was the journalist who broke out the news of hidden sponsorship deals between Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers to circumvent the salary cap. With Torre confirming his team will look into it, the former ESPN journalist is looking to continue his generational run.

NBA owners want Pablo Torre to ask questions about LeBron James’ deal with 76ers

There is no doubt that adding a player like James can transform an organization both on and off the court. Since his arrival, the 76ers have been seen as championship contenders and their revenues have shot up due to the surge in ticket prices.

The four-time champion has been one of the league’s highest-earning athletes for nearly two decades. However, his recent deal with Philly saw him sign a two-year, $8 million contract. While James has an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion in 2026, his latest deal has added to speculation of salary cap circumvention.

Pablo Torre revealed that the story has also attracted interest from people inside the league.

We’re also getting tips from NBA owners, who are sending me [the] story being like, ‘What is this?’

James’ partnership with Fanatics began in 2024. Michael Rubin, Fanatics founder, was a former minority owner of the 76ers and remains close to the current majority owner, Josh Harris. Along with James’ veteran contract, that adds to the curiosity around his deal with Fanatics.

LeBron James is gearing up for his first season with the 76ers

No player in NBA history has played as many seasons as LeBron James. After an impressive 23rd season, the 41-year-old has committed himself to the 76ers for two more seasons. Given his playoff performance last season, he’s likely to keep playing at a high level.

The excitement surrounding the 76ers is at an all-time high before even taking to the court in an official game. With the addition of Jaylen Brown and James to a team with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, they have put up the most dominant team in the league ahead of the new campaign.

Due to the arrival of James, the 76ers received a major increase in national broadcast games for the 2026–27 NBA season. They are scheduled to take on the defending champions New York Knicks on Opening Night on October 20.

Till then, all eyes will be on Pablo Torre and his team as they look to investigate James’ deal with Philly. After Kawhi Leonard, Torre has set his sights on the King.
