Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will go down as one of the greatest duos in Boston Celtics history. Both players were drafted as number three picks, with Brown being picked in 2016 and Tatum a year later.
The two stars grew up together and developed into arguably the most fearsome duo of the last decade. They played together for nine seasons and brought immense success to the Celtics.
During their stint together, they helped the Celtics win their first championship since 2008 when they beat the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals in 2024. They also made the Finals in 2022 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals five times.
Coming off his best individual campaign, the Celtics front office shocked the NBA world by trading Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in the offseason. While it saw the split of the iconic duo, several reports emerged that the two superstars have not been on good terms with each other.
To add fuel to the speculation, Brown commented a “cap” emoji on Instagram in response to a video where Tatum was saying that he was “just as much caught off guard as the rest of the world” by Brown’s trade. When asked about it in his press conference, Tatum explained that he doesn’t feel any animosity towards his former teammate.
It should be celebrated. You know how many people played in this league and never went to the Finals? We went twice and won a championship. This ain’t no f*cking Shaq and Kobe. There’s no beef. I understand drama gets clicks and views but I’m not really into that. I’m not blaming everybody for how they feel.

This is not the first time Tatum dismissed his beef with Brown and blamed the media for trying to pin them against each other. However, Tatum made it clear that he has no personal issues with Brown and insisted that their relationship should be remembered for the championship they won together rather than the controversy surrounding their separation.
Jayson Tatum is ready to have a conversation with Jaylen Brown
It is unfortunate that after all the achievements and success Jaylen Brown and Tatum brought to the franchise, it has been reduced to just drama in the end. Tatum even posted a heartfelt goodbye after Brown’s exit. However, rumors of their friction have only amplified since.

During their two preseason games against each other, Brown was seen catching up with some of his old teammates. But what caught everyone’s attention was that the two stars did not share any camaraderie and were not seen interacting. Brown even went on to reveal that they have not spoken to each other since his exit.
Speaking to reporters, Tatum said the two will communicate as they work to move past any misunderstandings.
I’m not saying it’s going to be a bad conversation. I just think, especially in sports and in the NBA, I think sometimes there is not enough communication. Not to blame y’all, but sometimes media can just continue to push or speculate. Rightfully so, that’s y’all job. And like I said, he just turned 30. I’m 28. Like it’s just as adults, just a conversation.

Is a conversation needed between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown? “I’m not saying it’s going to be a bad conversation. I just think, especially in sports and in the NBA, I think sometimes there is not enough communication. Not to blame y’all, but sometimes media or outside [noise] can just continue to push or speculate. Rightfully so, that’s y’all job. And like I said, he just turned 30. I’m 28. I got two kids. Like it’s just as adults, just a conversation.”

While Tatum may not have ill feelings toward Brown, the former MVP may not share the same perspective. After all, he did desire to end his career in Boston. Hence, the only way to move past it is for the two to communicate with each other, and Tatum is open to it.
Jayson Tatum was not consulted about the Jaylen Brown trade
Despite all the success together, there was always one question hanging in the air as to who this team belonged to. While many assumed it to be Jayson Tatum, it was Brown who was named the Eastern Conference Finals and Finals MVP during their championship run two years ago.
With Tatum missing the majority of the 2026-27 campaign due to injury, it was Brown who led them to the playoffs last season and even finished at sixth place in the MVP race. Hence, many believed that Brown was the leader of the team.
Tatum was criticized for allowing the Brown trade to happen. However, Celtics President Brad Stevens revealed that he wasn’t consulted about the trade.
Jayson is a friend of Jaylen, right? So we have not talked in great depth about that. I didn’t keep him in the loop. I didn’t talk to him the next day. I didn’t want to put that on him or anyone else in the playing group.
