On Wednesday, Pat Murphy ended up throwing some shade at the New York Yankees after the Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series. He later felt “terrible” about this, according to a Brewers’ star.

Earlier in the day, the Brewers picked up their first World Series championship as they beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field. After blowing the chance to sweep the Fall Classic on Tuesday, the Brewers made no mistake in Game 5.

Their victory saw them remove their name from the list of active teams in MLB that have never won the World Series. Murphy, a 2-time National League Manager of the Year, guided the Brewers to their first triumph in franchise history.

During the celebrations on the field, he had a moment with Jake Bauers. The former Yankees star had a breakout season this year. In the regular season, he smashed 26 home runs and had 86 RBIs in 144 games with a .266/.389/.484 slash line.

In the postseason, he was named the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP as his side swept the 2-time defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-0. Though he did not have a huge contribution in the World Series against the Rays, he was the one who caught the ball for the final out at first base.

As he got ready to hit free agency, he gifted the final out ball to Murphy. During this, the 67-year-old joked with him about his future and ended up throwing shade at the Yankees.

You’re going to be a rich f****er. Just remember when you’re on that horses**** Yankees team and you’re all playing for yourselves, just remember this is the way we used to do it.

These comments of his went viral on social media. Several Yankees fans were left unpleased with these words from the Brewers’ manager.

As per Trevor Megill, Murphy felt “terrible” about this. While speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, the reliever claimed that he (Murphy) would probably apologize to the Yankees organization for this.

He feels terrible, Pat. He feels terrible. I’m sure he will apologize to (Brian) Cashman and all the people over there. He genuinely just feels terrible about it.

Trevor Megill said regarding Pat Murphy on Pat McAfee Show

Speaking of Megill, he was the one who recorded the final out. He also had some trash talk and took digs at the division rivals, the Chicago Cubs, as his team finally won a championship ring.

Michael Kay questioned why Pat Murphy spoke about the Yankees after winning the World Series

On his ESPN radio show, the veteran broadcaster questioned why there was jealousy among people regarding the Yankees, despite them not winning the championship since 2009.

Milwaukee beats Tampa Bay, and rather than say something bad about Tampa Bay, the manager (Pat Murphy) finds a way to say something bad about the Yankees. Please talk me through it make me understand.

Michael Kay said

Murphy probably did not expect his conversation with Bauers to go viral. Nonetheless, his words could serve as fuel for the Yankees to turn things around.

After losing the World Series in 2024, they have been bounced in the American League Division Series (ALDS) in back-to-back seasons. Both times, the teams that beat them (Blue Jays in ’25 and Rays in ’26) went on to reach the Fall Classic, albeit ending up losing as well.

With the loss this year, their World Series title drought now stretches up to 17 years. This is the second-longest drought in their franchise history.
