“Impeach 47” Anti-Donald Trump Jersey Spotted During USMNT’s Trouncing Loss To Belgium

The FIFA World Cup 2026 has shown once again that sport is inherently political, with the alarming rates for tickets and parking, significant biases in visa denials for fans, and heightened security checks for players. Taking place across the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico, this edition has seen an unprecedented political interference.
In a recent incident, Folarin Balogun, AS Monaco and USMNT forward, was given the eligibility to play against Belgium in the Round of 32 despite being sent off in the previous match. After a VAR review, referee Raphael Claus showed Balogun a red card for dragging his cleats on an opponent defender’s leg and onto his feet. Though fans floated the idea of a Donald Trump intervention, it wasn’t given much attention.
However, it did happen. Trump, who is on friendly terms with the FIFA President Gianni Infantino, reportedly made three calls and urged them to overturn the red card rules. Balogun ended up playing against Belgium in the game on Monday night. It was one of the poorest performances by the USMNT in this tournament, and addition of Balogun didn’t make much difference either.
While Belgium handed one of the heaviest defeats to the North Americans, the fans were targeting the country’s president with a customized jersey. Tom Bogart, a sports journalist who was in Seattle, tweeted that a fan in the stadium had a very creative way to take a jab with a shirt design. These USMNT jerseys carried the number 47, and instead of the player’s name, they had the word “impeach.”
Walking around Seattle ahead of the USMNT game. Plenty of USMNT jerseys including this custom one IMPEACH kit for Donald Trump.

The Red Devils annihilated a lazy USMNT at Seattle
The USMNT had shown a lot of potential in the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stages. The roster played as a unit, handing Paraguay and Australia resounding losses. While Turkiye did defeat them in the last matchday, it was a battle hardly fought, but unfortunately fate didn’t side with them.

After defeating a European side in Bosnia and Herzegovina, spirits were high. After the ensuing drama of Folarin Balogun, the USMNT looked extremely confident of a win. However, the Red Devils were relentless and reduced the US defense to shambles. After an early goal from Charles de Ketelaere in the ninth minute, Malik Tillman became only the second player in the World Cup history to score from two direct freekicks in a single World Cup and equalized the game.
What followed next was a proper rout. Starting with two minutes after the equalizer, Ketelaere came through for the Europeans once again, heading a cross from Leonard Trossard into the net.
As the defense became sloppy, the 25-year-old from Bruges took advantage of Matt Freese‘s haphazard goalkeeping, taking the ball from his foot while the latter was out of the box. Ketelaere passed it to Hans Vanaken. Vanaken didn’t fret, took a shot, sailed into the net, as Freese and the defenders looked on with jaws dropped.
After going 1-3, the USMNT had lost all momentum. Romelu Lukaku scored the final goal and sealed the nail in the coffin. Lukaku had a phone cal celebration, and the team joined together to do a Trump dance on the sidelines, mocking the president’s interference which went in vain. The team even continued their joy into the locker rooms where a much visible Trump dance was performed.

While Donald Trump remain oblivious and say that “there’s always next year” without realizing that the event takes place in four years, it marked the end of one of the best runs for the North Americans in recent history.
