Asuka lost a gritty battle to Iyo Sky on Saturday at WWE Backlash. The emotions started to kick in once it was over. ‘The Empress of Tomorrow’ had tears in her eyes, and she pulled Sky in for a hug. Asuka was spotted waving her hands for the crowd while walking up that ramp to the back as if it were a goodbye from her.
While she has yet to confirm it, an assessment of the situation from Dave Meltzer has revealed that Asuka is semi-retired. The veteran journalist couldn’t elaborate on that phrase during Wrestling Observer Radio with Bryan Alvarez. Meltzer wasn’t sure if it’d mean Asuka going back to Japan and wrestling periodically.
“The story I heard is that she (Asuka) is ‘semi-retired’.

I haven’t really gotten an exact meaning of what ‘semi-retired’ means. But I guess, people were wishing her goodbye and things like that backstage so…
I don’t know if that means she’s going to Japan and still wrestle,… pic.twitter.com/vR7d1nXOgu
Big E said during the Backlash post-show that he’d never seen Asuka that emotional. He wasn’t certain if she was indeed retiring or not. The former New Day member added that if that’s actually it for Asuka, she would be dearly missed.

“I wondered, ‘Is this a goodbye?’ We’ve never really seen Asuka this emotional.
If this is goodbye, I know she will be dearly missed. She has been a pioneer. She has done just truly incredible things in the ring before she even got to WWE, but has further… pic.twitter.com/casMjUvJGE
Acknowledging her achievements from before her time in WWE, E affirmed that she further staked the claim of an all-time great in the Stamford-based promotion. Having debuted in WWE in October 2015, she would embark on a 149-match undefeated streak in NXT, which spilled over to the main roster until WrestleMania 34, where she incurred her first loss to Charlotte Flair.
The time span of her streak lasted 914 days. The Osaka-born wrestling icon also holds the distinction of winning the inaugural women’s Royal Rumble match in 2018. She’s had four different world title reigns on the main roster in WWE and five women’s tag team title reigns with the likes of Kairi Sane, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss.
Asuka receives the admiration of fellow WWE women following tear-jerking Iyo Sky match
The match that Asuka had with Iyo Sky at Backlash could very well end up her last in WWE. They were the only women’s match on the card. Both were given an ample amount of time to express themselves in terms of the story they were telling on top of the in-ring action. And they delivered a match to remember.

Sky, the student, finally overcame her senpai in what truly appeared as a passing of the torch moment. In an emotional post-match note, Sky wrote on social media that her story with Asuka came to its final chapter with their match at Backlash. She added that her heart was full of emotions the moment it ended. ‘The Genius of the Sky’ was grateful for having spent time with Asuka and sitting under her learning tree.
