Deontay Wilder (standing) finishes Robert Helenius within a single round

Deontay Wilder returned to the boxing ring last night, a year after his loss to Tyson Fury. And, what a memorable comeback it was!

After a downward spiral in the last couple of years, Deontay Wilder’s return to the octagon had been highly anticipated. Despite losing to Fury twice, no one really forgot the “Bronze Bomber’s” inherent talent and his night-ending power.

Exactly that was on full display last night, in his bout against Finnish boxer Robert Helenius, where he ended the fight within one round. For context, the maximum duration for the fight could have been 48 minutes, that is, twelve three-minute rounds.

In the lead-up to the jab, Helenius can be seen trailing Wilder around the octagon, before getting completely discombobulated by his shot.

What makes the brutal knockout even more shocking is that the round had barely a few seconds left. Wilder could have proceeded gingerly, but one mammoth jab ended Helenius’ night.

With a quick night at the office, Deontay Wilder’s record now stands at 43-2-1. Of the 43 wins, a staggering 42 have come by way of knockout.

One would assume that Deontay Wilder was the world heavyweight champion with a record that encompasses more than three dozen knockouts.

That, however, is not the case. Deontay Wilder had a perfect record – that is, he was undefeated before he met with Tyson Fury in the ring.

The two met for the first time in 2018. With both coming off of wins, the bout was highly hyped. However, most of the headlines went to Tyson Fury, despite it looking like he had been KO’d stiff in the last round. But, Fury got up heroically to drag his opponent to a draw.

The next two bouts were not close. In 2020, in their rematch, Fury got the jump over Wilder with a TKO finish in the seventh round. And, just last year, in the trilogy – despite being dropped early a couple of times, Fury outclassed his opponent to get a scintillating 11th round KO.

Both the boxers have fought once since their epic trilogy. While Wilder put in an exemplary display last night, Tyson Fury sent Dillian Whyte packing six months back. Although the “Bronze Bomber” was sent off track with the two losses, it doesn’t look like the fire has sizzled out, as his brutal KO showcased.
