The New England Patriots are cutting it close with Christian Gonzalez. Even though the Patriots kick off their season against the Seattle Seahawks in a week, Gonzalez, their star cornerback, remains in contract limbo.

Gonzalez is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal with the Patriots. In the offseason, Seattle extended Devon Witherspoon‘s contract, a $33 million-per-year extension, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

Experts project Gonzalez to sign an even bigger deal. However, per reports, the Patriots are nowhere close to finalizing an extension with the 24-year-old. At this rate, he could hold out and miss the season’s opening game against Seattle. When asked if he had heard anything about his contract, a poker-faced Gonzalez replied, “I don’t know.”

Reporters pressed Gonzo, asking if the tension would affect his chances of playing in week one.

I’m here right now. I’m here… [Right now] I’m worried about this practice, focused on this practice. I’ll always be where my feet are and do what I’ve got to do.

Christian Gonzalez said

Unlike the player before him, who refused to practice until an extension, Gonzalez attended Patriots spring training. The Patriots included him on the final 53-man roster. But what happens if the two sides fail to find common ground before the Seattle game?

I don’t want to get into that with the media.

Patriots went 1-1-1 in preseason. Gonzalez did not play in any of them.

Mike Vrabel makes his stance clear on Christian Gonzalez’s contract stalemate with the Patriots

Gonzalez contributed 69 tackles and 10 passes defensed for a New England defense that ranked fourth in points allowed in 2025. In the postseason, he recorded an interception, a sack, and a league-leading seven passes defensed. Gonzalez reached his first Pro Bowl a year after an All-Pro selection.

The Patriots activated his fifth-year option. But with just four days left until the regular season, only an extension could motivate Gonzalez to suit up once again.

Reporters asked head coach Mike Vrabel about Gonzalez’s situation. Vrabel made it clear that he has no say in the matter.

I don’t get involved in the negotiations, per se, but I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the situation resolved.

Vrabel said

Vrabel further clarified that he has prepared the team for every possibility. They would be fine even if Gonzalez did not join them for the Seattle game.

We’ll have multiple game plans based on what the down and distance is, what personnel they are in, how the game may unfold. We have to be flexible and be willing and ready to adjust. That’ll never change.

Vrabel said on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show

Vrabel’s statement doesn’t sound reassuring because experts view Gonzalez as an irreplaceable piece on the Patriots roster. The players behind the former Oregon star are a couple of rookies.

The Patriots drafted Karon Prunty 171st overall out of Wake Forest. And the other guy in the depth chart is undrafted DB Channing Canada, who played for TCU in college.

Carlton Davis is the left-sided DB, with veterans Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard slotting in at safety. NFL.com did not include the Patriots in its top 10 NFL defenses list.
