Russell Domingo wants Bangladesh to aim at around 300-350 in overseas ODIs

Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo expects his side to aim around 300 and 350 runs in One-day Internationals (ODIs) under overseas conditions. He reckons the toughest challenge for his side is to triumph away from home in different conditions.

Domingo feels that his team’s following aim should be to achieve success while playing abroad. He wants them to modify their techniques to overseas conditions, particularly their ability to score runs and begin by prevailing in one or two major contests.

“The big challenge for this ODI team is to try to win away from home under different conditions. They are a very good team in Bangladesh. I think if we can get that confidence going away from home, it will be a big thing. I think playing away from home, we need to win one or two big games. Once you get the confidence and belief that you can do it, that will put the team in a much better place mentally,” said Russell Domingo to ESPNcricinfo.

Bangladesh recently won the three-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka 2-1. It was the team’s tenth ODI series win at home since 2015, out of a total of eleven. However, they have a poor record overseas. Since April 2015, Bangladesh have lost five of seven ODI series overseas, with their only win coming against the West Indies in 2018, after leveling the series against Sri Lanka in 2017.

The 230s or 240s, according to Domingo, could be enough to defend in Dhaka, but not if Bangladesh are competing away from home.

“I am not at all concerned by the number of runs we are scoring in Dhaka. You can only score as much as the wickets allow you sometimes. Not many times teams get 300 in Dhaka. Definitely, when you are playing away from home, 230s or 240s are not going to win you many games. We have to be able to challenge ourselves, play expansively to get up to 300 and 350. It is of paramount importance in the modern game,” added Russell Domingo.

Bangladesh will next play against Zimbabwe for three ODI’s at the Harare Sports Club in July. Following that, they will fight against England, Afghanistan, South Africa, and Ireland to complete their remaining matches of the ICC ODI Super League. Currently, they stand at the top of the table after their victory against Sri Lanka.
