The 2022 T20 World Cup winners England stayed back in Australia for a three-match ODI series, which commenced on Thursday (November 17). England opener Jason Roy, who was excluded for the showpiece event after a poor run with the bat, made a return to the side.

However, Roy’s comeback didn’t go well as became a victim of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc’s greatness. The incident happened in the fifth over when the left-arm pacer bowled a cracking inswinger. Roy was left in double mind and by the time he was able to bring his bat down, the ball went on to crash into the stumps.

Australia’s new ODI skipper Pat Cummins’ decision to bowl first turned out to be good as the home side got access to early wickets. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, England reached a moderate total of 287. Dawid Malan alone scored 134 runs off 128 balls, including 12 fours and four sixes.

Batter Sam Billings praised Eoin Morgan for bringing a change to England’s cricketing approach. He said that their depth in white-ball is pretty scary. He also pointed out that the English side remained settled at the T20 World Cup despite many players missing out due to different reasons.

“Eoin Morgan single handedly turned it around, and it’s been a process over eight years when you look at the depth in terms of white-ball cricket that England possesses. It’s pretty scary actually. So even with the injuries that happened in this World Cup, and the guys who missed out on the squad, the strength and depth is amazing to see,” he said.
