- Dak Prescott expressed confidence in George Pickens' readiness for the upcoming season despite his franchise tag situation.
- The Cowboys have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal with Pickens, who is currently on a one-year, $27.3 million tag.
- Ryan Flournoy's strong performance last season could impact Pickens' contract negotiations and future role with the team.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott affirmed his trust in George Pickens, who remains with the team on a one-year, $27.3 million franchise tag deal. As someone who has been placed on franchise tag twice in his career, Prescott knows what’s going through Pickens’ mind now.
The management and Pickens have until July 15 to come to an agreement about the new deal. Nonetheless, the Cowboys COO Stephen Jones has already stated that the team intends to retain him, while also announcing that the wideout’s representation isn’t seeking a multi-year deal this offseason.
At the NFL Owners meeting this March, Jerry Jones said something similar while addressing that there will be future planning with Pickens. Amid the hullabaloo, Prescott has voiced his support for Pickens.
I’ve just shown George my support. The guy that I know George is, obviously, he signed the tag, so when he has to be there and ready to play, he’s going to be there. He’s a hell of a talent. We’ve thrown this offseason, so I’m comfortable with where he’s at, and I’m excited for when he can get in the building and get rolling.
The 32-year-old, playing his eleventh season for the franchise, is amongst the quarterbacks who have the most to prove this coming season. As the highest paid athlete in the league, Prescott has a ‘now more than ever’ challenge at his hand to show that the gamble Jones took paid off.
The last season saw Prescott punching more numbers than he had in the injury-ridden couple of seasons before. He led the league with 404 completions for 4,552 yards, thirty touchdowns, and ten interceptions.
An important part of why Prescott had high numbers was George Pickens, who was traded in from the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the season. In their first season together, Prescott and Pickens connected 93 times with career-highs for Pickens in yards (1,429) and touchdowns (9).
Ryan Flournoy’s ascent could change everything for George Pickens
While the headlines from voluntary workouts focus on Dak Prescott’s unwavering public confidence in a missing George Pickens, there is an underlying shift happening within the Dallas Cowboys. The Mississippi alum can afford to be patient with Pickens’ franchise-tag standoff for one very clear reason: Ryan Flournoy’s exceptional sophomore season last year.

Ryan Flournoy, who’s also known as ‘Flo,’ declared himself a Prescott safety blanket on third down with 475 yards and four touchdowns from 40 receptions. Twenty-nine of Ryan’s forty receptions resulted in first downs. Now that Flournoy is a third-year wide receiver, there are additional demands on him.
At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, the wideout possesses the prototypical build to play virtually any role across Brian Schottenheimer’s formation and his plans for the coming season. He has the vertical speed to stretch the boundary, the frame to shield off defensive backs over the middle, and the crisp change-of-direction to operate out of the slot.
Flournoy isn’t going to supplant Pickens on the depth chart in 2026; however, he could make things difficult for Pickens if he manages to show similar numbers and performance in the upcoming season. With Pickens’ franchise tag and eye-balling a market-setting contract extension, there’s no doubt that Dallas faces a looming financial crunch.
He’s performing at starter levels, and if he has another season like 2025, he might surpass $40 million annually in 2027. Even with a breakthrough season in 2026, Flournoy is unlikely to come close to half that amount. However, he would see him catapulting into the limelight.
