The New York Jets are looking to bounce back after a horrible 2025-26 campaign that ended with a 3-14 record. Head coach Aaron Glenn brought back 2013 second-round draft pick Geno Smith as the team’s new starting quarterback. Three years later, the Jets drafted Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee 20th overall.

While Smith is still starting NFL games at 35, Lee finds himself in serious trouble. A grand jury in Hamilton County recently indicted Lee on a murder charge in the death of his partner.

The state is reportedly pursuing a first-degree murder conviction, which carries a life sentence. The state is in the process of deciding whether to pursue the death penalty against Lee. That decision will be taken in the upcoming weeks.

Why is Darron Lee facing the death penalty?

According to a report from the Associated Press, Darron Lee, 31, is accused of killing Gabriella Perpetuo, 29, on February 6, 2026. Perpetuo’s autopsy report disclosed that she died from 12 injuries to her body, including multiple hematomas, bone fractures, and stab wounds.

Per police records, Lee was on probation in Franklin County, Ohio, and Alachua County, Florida, when he was arrested in February. Lee was charged with three separate alleged assaults involving a different man, Lee’s mother, and the mother of his child.

The documents also note that Lee asked ChatGPT (artificial intelligence) for assistance on ways to deal with injuries without notifying the police.

Lee played 58 games for three different NFL teams: the Jets, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Buffalo Bills. He registered 273 combined tackles, 17 TFLs, 4 sacks, 11 passes defended, and three interceptions.

In June 2021, he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was released in August and hasn’t played a game ever since.

Geno Smith sees a lot of potential in the current Jets roster

The Jets are the only remaining team in the NFL that hasn’t played postseason football since 2010. To end that drought, the Jets are taking inspiration from the Knicks.

Smith, who signed a veteran minimum contract, sees a lot of potential in the current Jets roster.

I see a lot of potential in this team. I think AG is doing a great job of showing us the vision of what he wants & how he wants us to go out there & play & be [the Jets] & for me, as the QB, I know there’s a lot of work to be put in.

Smith believes this team can make a serious push for the Super Bowl, a feat the Gang Green hasn’t matched since Joe Namath led the team to a championship victory in the 1968-69 season.

It won’t be easy for the Jets as they have drawn the 12th-toughest schedule. Their opponent’s record last year was 149-139-1 (0.517).

Geno spent the 2025 season with the Raiders. In 15 starts, Smith registered a 2-13 record. He had 302 completions for 3025 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions (most in the league). He was also sacked 55 times (most in the league).
