Max Verstappen often faces criticism from British media, especially for on-track incidents. At the 2024 Austrian G, his aggressive driving led to a collision with Lando Norris, prompting significant backlash. Many pundits and former drivers sided with Norris, claiming Verstappen faced harsh scrutiny than deserved.

The British media has faced criticism for favoring local drivers in Formula 1 and often belittling others like Max Verstappen. Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey has previously stated that the Dutchman is frequently portrayed as a bad guy by the British.

However, former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner believes that Verstappen’s achievements in the last two years have sparked controversies, leading to scrutiny. He pointed out that British media tends to support local talents like Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris.

No, Max obviously steers controversy because he won so much. That’s the only thing, And in the end, we are all nationals. We love our own people, so I think the British press, with having quite a few English drivers, they like it more when Lewis [Hamilton], George [Russell], Lando [Norris] win than Max [Verstappen]. I don’t think it’s against him personally.

Guenther Steiner told GPblog.com

The 59-year-old said that British media’s criticism of Verstappen often arises from intense national fandom and not bias. This reflects a broader sports trend where fans support their countrymen, leading to harsher views of foreign rivals.

It’s coming out in English press more than anything else. It’s not like that they are against Max, because I think Max represents him and I’m not trying to be nice with him. I think he’s a champion, and obviously when you’re champion you’re critiqued. But Max, I don’t think Max gives a s**t about it.

Gunther Steiner claims Max Verstappen doesn’t let the bias bother him

Everyone can have their own opinion on various things and it’s normal for people to think differently. Respecting different views helps us have better conversations and learn from each other, even when we disagree. Gunther Steiner believes that even if someone thinks he’s foolish, it’s okay with him.

Steiner mentioned that Verstappen is aware that not everyone was a fan of his. However, the Dutchman doesn’t let it bother him and simply doesn’t care about it.

It’s like me. If you think I’m an idiot, I’m fine with it. It’s like ‘hey think whatever you want’, just don’t not keep on telling me, because I don’t want to speak with you. And I think Max is very similar to that one. He’s saying, ‘yeah, they’re not my fans. Who cares?

Gunther Steiner opined

People naturally tend to support drivers from their own country or those they feel closely connected to. Creating controversies with drivers from other nations also boosts television ratings, leading to more viewers and revenue.
