Many pundits and former drivers sided with Norris, claiming Verstappen faced harsh scrutiny than deserved.
The British media has faced criticism for favoring local drivers in Formula 1 and often belittling others like Max Verstappen. Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey has previously stated that the Dutchman is frequently portrayed as a bad guy by the British.
However, former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner believes that Verstappen’s achievements in the last two years have sparked controversies, leading to scrutiny. He pointed out that British media tends to support local talents like Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris.
The 59-year-old said that British media’s criticism of Verstappen often arises from intense national fandom and not bias. This reflects a broader sports trend where fans support their countrymen, leading to harsher views of foreign rivals.
Gunther Steiner claims Max Verstappen doesn’t let the bias bother him
Everyone can have their own opinion on various things and it’s normal for people to think differently. Respecting different views helps us have better conversations and learn from each other, even when we disagree. Gunther Steiner believes that even if someone thinks he’s foolish, it’s okay with him.
Steiner mentioned that Verstappen is aware that not everyone was a fan of his. However, the Dutchman doesn’t let it bother him and simply doesn’t care about it.
