The debate for the greatest driver of all time has been going on for decades. Lewis Hamilton has won the most world titles along with Michael Schumacher, often making the debate a highly contested one. Dutchman Max Verstappen has recently joined in the conversation too. Only a few drivers have ever earned the title of being a great racer on track and Jolyon Palmer asserted that Fernando Alonso was at the top.

Lewis Hamilton won his seven world championships while displaying his skill and dominance. Max Verstappen took the bar up a notch as the roaring Dutchman lit up the track and completed the most successful F1 season ever by any driver in 2023. This set the precedent for the upcoming seasons as both the drivers are still lighting up the tracks around the world.

Despite this, Jolyon Palmer has claimed Fernando Alonso is the greatest wheel-to-wheel racer while leaving out Verstappen and Hamilton.

There's a level. I'm not very hard on drivers, I've been a driver. You have to push the rules a bit, but in the end you like to have a fair fight, you know what the rules are and if you go beyond the rules, it's not a fair race. I've always been a fair driver, I think other great racers, like Fernando Alonso, he's probably the best wheel-to-wheel.
Jolyon Palmer said on the Beyond The Grid podcast

During his time in F1, Palmer had a fair share of racing action with Alonso. Observing the Spaniard’s fierce defense techniques while always staying under the white line was impressive, as the Brit elaborated.

Palmer is not the first F1 personality to rank Alonso higher than Verstappen and Hamilton. The 43-year-old is clearly still at the top of his game and is ready to begin his new F1 chapter with Adrian Newey as the Brit is set to join Aston Martin next year.

Max Verstappen reveales his banter with Fernando Alonso around Le Mans

While Max Verstappen has started to explore his options beyond F1, Fernando Alonso has been a veteran as he has almost tried every form of motorsport that is available. Moreover, the Spaniard has been a former Le Mans winner, which has occasionally sparked a debate about his return to endurance racing in the future.

The reigning champion revealed how he has often joked about making his debut at Le Mans with the veteran driver but has never been able to.

I keep joking with Fernando [Alonso] that we want to do it together so that would be quite cool. Then we have got three drivers already. I keep telling my dad that we have to do it. He doesn't want to do it but I would add him in as a fourth. It would be a fun week, that's for sure
Max Verstappen said in an interview with Jarno Opmeer

The 26-year-old stated that he told the Aston Martin driver about participating in the endurance race together. Moreover, he would also convince his dad, Jos Verstappen, to partner with their team as a reserve and take on the challenge of the 24-hour race together.
