The 2023 Austrian Grand Prix results have been challenged by the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. There was originally no more information provided by the FIA when it announced that an Aston Martin representative had been called before the stewards at 6:30 p.m. local time regarding the objection made by Aston Martin. The FIA quickly revealed that Aston had a problem with the way the stewards imposed track limit penalties, despite the team’s initial refusal to disclose the specifics of its objection. According to Aston Martin, during the 71-lap race on Sunday, a “number of cars” were not fined for violating the circuit regulations.

According to an FIA notification, the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 Team has protested the provisional classification. “The protest claims that a number of cars were not penalised for a breach of Article 33.3 of the Sporting Regulations. A hearing will be conducted at 1830 hrs.”, said an FIA statement. The Provisional Classification’s accuracy was contested in the protest by Aston Martin. The Stewards initially evaluated if the protest was valid. The Stewards ruled that it was an admissible protest because it was timely filed and in accordance with Chapter 13 of the FIA International Sporting Code.

Eight drivers received five-second penalties for breaching the white lines during the Spielberg race, mostly in Turns 9 and 10. The Spielberg race was plagued with track restriction violations. AMR racers Stroll and Alonso both finished within five seconds of Pierre Gasly in the Alpine, while Alonso finished just ahead of Norris’ McLaren. Therefore, if there are any additional five-second infractions, both drivers would advance. Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the race with a dominant drive, maintaining the Milton Keynes team’s streak of winning every race in 2023. Fernando Alonso finished sixth, and Lance Stroll completed the top ten to give the Silverstone team a double-points result at the Red Bull Ring.

Apart from the RB19 the next best car on the grid is currently that of Aston Martin’s. Although both Ferraris displayed some clean performances, Aston Martin were the third fastest team on the grid. After finishing on the podium at the Canadian Grand Prix, Aston Martin had a more understated performance at the Red Bull Ring. Fernando Alonso finished in sixth place, and said, “I think it was more or less the maximum we could achieve today. We were very close to Lando [Norris] in terms of pace and also the Mercedes.”

This move from Aston Martin might help their drivers rack up some positions if the penalties are administered here in Spielberg or in the British Grand Prix. 5 second time penalties to 3 grid place penalties can be administered to the drivers. It might not be the end of the Racing weekend for many of the teams as FIA has several incidents to follow up before the British Grand Prix.
