Mercedes driver George Russell leaves the Miami GP circuit with a decent P4. However, it is nothing compared to the results that the Brackley based squad was pouring out before the 2022 rule change came into play. After looking like the team to beat in free practices, the expectations from fans and critics were high. The team’s result on the other hand came as a disappointment to many.
After a blunder during the Miami GP qualifying, Sergio Perez had qualified on pole while his teammate Max Verstappen was all the way back in P9. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop the Dutchman from showing his and the car’s potential as he went on to win the race. Max won the race in a dominant fashion as he beat his teammate to the checkered flag holding a 5+ second gap.
This in turn seemed rather fishy to George Russell. The Mercedes hot shot has speculated that the Red Bull’s aren’t showing their true potential yet. He believes that the car is even faster but that hasn’t been shown to the public. This being due to Adrian Newey and the folks at Red Bull trying to prevent a rule change to slow them down.

George Russell is completely baffled by Red Bull’s dominance following Mercedes’s poor performance

In an interview, here is what he had to say. “We said at the start of the season they’re so far ahead they’ve got it easy at the moment. I wonder if they’re even running full power or anything, they’re just so far ahead,” he said. Red Bull’s dominance is “a bit of a shame for the sport. But kudos to them for the good work that they’ve clearly done and shown what is possible when you get it right. So that’s what we’re going to be chasing, and see what we can achieve,” he continued.
George Russell was 7 seconds further behind Fernando Alonso while Lewis Hamilton was struggling and another 18 seconds behind in 6th place. This goes on to showcase Mercedes’s shock start to the 2023 F1 season. However, the team has planned some crucial updates for Imola which might help them close the gap to Red Bull. All is to play for in 2023.
