Nelson Piquet and Lewis Hamilton
Nelson Piquet, the former 3-time F1 World Champion, is all set to pay a hefty fine imposed on him for his homophobic and racist comments against Lewis Hamilton. Things haven’t panned out well for Piquet since his comments, and it has come to light that he has reportedly lost his recent appeal against the fine.
In March, Nelson Piquet was ordered to pay a fine of five million Brazilian Reals ($953,000) when charges against him were brought to the court by four human rights groups. Brazil’s renowned National LGBT+ Alliance was also one of them that played a major role in bringing significant attention to the matter.
Piquet first found himself in hot waters when his comments from 2016 and 2022 came to light. In the remarks, he discussed Lewis Hamilton’s Championship battles with former teammate Nico Rosberg and the reigning World Champion, Max Verstappen. While he has received a lot of heat since then, he has always maintained that he had no intention of being racist toward Hamilton.
Another thing that has also played a decent role in Piquet finding himself in the unwanted limelight is that his daughter, Kellly Piqet, is Max Verstappen’s girlfriend. The Dutchman has also been asked previously to talk about Piquet’s comments, and just like him, Verstappen has also indicated that Piquet never intended to abuse Lewis Hamilton via his remarks racially.
Lewis Hamilton’s take on Nelson Piquet’s comments
While Nelson Piquet has found it hard to get a good night’s sleep since his comments regarding Hamilton came to light, the latter has also struggled to deal with it. Lewis Hamilton is the only black racer in F1 and has now and then raised his voice to support diversity in the sport.
When Lewis Hamilton was previously asked to share his thoughts on Piquet’s comments, he said, “I’m incredibly grateful to all those that have been supportive within the sport, particularly the drivers. I’ve been on the receiving end of racism and criticism and that negativity and archaic narratives for a long, long time, and undertones of discrimination, so there’s nothing really particularly new for me.”
Looking at the comments of Hamilton, It is crystal clear that he was incredibly hurt by the remarks of Nelson Piquet. Considering everything that has happened regarding the Piquet-Hamilton saga, do you see more trouble heading the way of Piquet in the upcoming months?
