British GP 2022: Massive carnage at Turn 1 leads to early RED Flag; George Russell and Yuki Tsunoda suffer significant car damage

Just as the cars finished their formation lap and the commentators uttered the customary “Lights out, and away we go!” to mark the start of the British Grand Prix, the historic Silverstone Circuit exploded in a flurry of action as Max Verstappen quickly took the lead by going past pole-sitter Carlos Sainz, and Lewis Hamilton went past Charles Leclerc.

But Ferrari’s woes at losing one grid position for each of their two racers right at the beginning of the race got outweighed by the woes of the racers who started in the middle of the grid as a massive collision took down George Russell, Esteban Ocon, Guanyu Zhou and Alex Albon.

George Russell experiences his first DNF in 2022 in his home race

Mercedes’ George Russell, who has finished in the top 5 in all the nine races that came before the British GP in the 2022 F1 Calendar, had to retire from his home race as his Mercedes had sustained terrible damage due to the collision. This called for a red flag right at the start of the British Grand Prix.

Not just George Russell, but there were several other racers whose races were impacted by the incident at the start of the race. Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, who failed to get into Q3 in yesterday’s Qualifying, started going slow as his car could not speed up after the collision and Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda also complained of some damage to his car. As per the reports, the cars are currently being repaired during the red flag, and the racers are expected to get a pitlane start when the tracks are cleared for racing once more
