Carlos Sainz and Ferrari had a bit of a weird race weekend at the 2023 Canadian GP. Throughout the season, Ferrari have not shown any signs of being a prominent contender for P2 in the constructors championship. While they seem to have performance issues at times, bad strategy calls have led to the team having a disadvantage even then things have been going their way. Something similar happened in Montreal with the Scuderia.
After a rain guzzled qualifying session, Max Verstappen went on to take pole position for Sunday’s race. The Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc went on to start the race in 10th and 11th after a string of grid penalties were handed. The race itself was pretty interesting for the Scuderia as they went on to finish 4th and 5th with Max, Fernando and Lewis closing out the podium.
Ferrari’s decent finish in Montreal was partly thanks to their one stop strategy which let them jump some rivals to finish in the top 5. Another thing to note was the fact that Ferrari’s race pace seemed to be much more improved and consistent in Canada. Carlos Sainz was of the opinion that Canada’s circuit layout was a great example showcasing Ferrari’s true race pace.

In an interview, here is what the Spaniard had to say. “I knew Canada was going to be a better track and it was confirmed on Friday pace already,” he said when asked by Autosport about how track-specific Ferrari’s improvement was. “We just confirmed that at a lower deg circuit, also slower speed corners, which we know we are stronger at. And today we could show a bit more our true pace,” he said.
Ferrari’s consistency had been bouncing up and down this season. However, Canada has seemingly impressed Carlos Sainz when it comes to the car’s race pace. While Max Verstappen and Red Bull are seemingly running away with the championship, it will be interesting to see what the Scuderia will do in order to catch up with their rivals in terms of performance.
