“Carlos was racing not to win but to protect Charles”: Terruzzi claims Carlos Sainz did not understand his role in the Monaco Grand Prix

Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz
Spanish racer Carlos Sainz has had a brilliant start to the 2022 season of Formula 1, but he soon faced several problems for which he had to retire from two consecutive races in Australia and Imola, and then he slowly tried to climb back up the grid ranks. Now, being the teammate of Charles Lecerc has put a lot of expectations on Carlos’ shoulders.
Charles is being projected as a potential World Championship winner for this year, and Carlos wants to perform equally well to show he is worthy of the Ferrari seat. And perhaps, that is the reason why he has allegedly overestimated his role in the Monaco Grand Prix from last week.
While he was at McLaren, Carlos Sainz engaged in a playful competition with his then-teammate Lando Norris, but after he signed with Scuderia Ferrari, he has constantly been trying to make sure he is worthy of being in the oldest and most successful racing team in this sport. In his debut year at Ferrari, the Spaniard outranked Charles Leclerc in the WDC Standings, but the table has turned this year.

In Jerruzzi’s words, Carlos Sainz never understood his part in the Monaco Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz was running second in the Championship standings this year at one point, just after his teammate Charles Leclerc. But right now, he has gone to the the fifth position, much like Charles who has been usurped from his leading position in the rankings by his Championship rival Max Verstappen.
In the Monaco Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz started from the second position in the grid. While beginning the race alongside his teammate from the first row, he was supposed to protect Charles Leclerc from getting overtaken by the Red Bull of Sergio Perez behind him. But instead, Carlos got ambitious and tried to aim for the race winner’s title himself.
Speaking of Carlos’ misunderstanding of the Monaco Grand Prix, Italian F1 journalist Giorgio Terruzzi mentioned that he was totally mistaken about his role in the entire race. Terruzzi said, “Sainz decided the strategy on his own.”
He further continued, “The fact is that Carlos was not racing to win but to protect Leclerc. He smelled the opportunity he has always been waiting for, he wanted to dare, he thought he should have won.”
