“It’s pretty difficult for him to beat Max over a season,” David Coulthard does not believe in Sergio Perez’s Championship dreams

After years of disappointing moments when Red Bull simply could not find Max Verstappen a teammate who would equal his push towards success and his grit for perfection, it finally seems like the Austrian team has hit the jackpot with the hiring of Sergio Perez. At the very end of the F1 2020 season, Perez was being bombarded with questions about his future steps in Formula 1 since his contract with Racing Point was coming to an end, and he had no new deal with any other team to look forward to. And at that time, Checo was thrown the lifeboat by Red Bull.

Red Bull was at a difficult position at the end of 2020 as well. They had Max Verstappen’s talent and a brilliant tactical team, but could still not zero in on the Championship win because of one problem–they did not have a second driver who would help Max Verstappen. Alex Albon’s results in that season proved that he was way behind Verstappen than how the team executives would have liked, and thus he was dismissed by the team.

With the arrival of Sergio Perez, things changed completely for Red Bull. The Mexican was instrumental in Max Verstappen winning his first World Championship title as Perez had fought against Lewis Hamilton valiantly, keeping his black Mercedes at bay while Verstappen built some distance between him and his rival. In 2022, Checo helped Max once again in many of the races. But in the upcoming 2023 season, he has clarified that he will be aiming for a title win as well.

David Coulthard hopes Sergio Perez will be “mature enough” to realise he might never beat Max Verstappen

In the recent F1 seasons, Max Verstappen has established a dominion that can only be challenged by a few of his contemporaries. His own teammate at Red Bull, Sergio Perez, believes he can win the title by beating Max, but David Coulthard has his doubts. While addressing this matter, he said, “Checo, although he of course dreams of being world champion, of course he believes when everything is working, he has the pace to beat Max. He’s also mature enough to realize that it’s pretty difficult for him to beat Max over a season.

Sergio Perez is now 32 years of age, and if he wants to make a go for the Formula 1 World Championship, he has to do it fast. The racing great is hailed for his skilled driving and his vast experience when it comes to keeping his rivals at bay and winning the races, but only time will tell if he is adept enough to snatch the Drivers’ Championship title by beating his teammate Max Verstappen.
