Did Lewis Hamilton get invited to King Charles’ coronation?

In the modern world, stories of kings and queens get lost in the middle of the daily, monotonous corporate lives. But in England, the people hold a great amount of respect and reverence for the monarchy even in the 21st century. Ever since 1953, Queen Elizabeth II had kept her position as the Leader of the country till she breathed her last in 2022 at the Balmoral Castle. Now, the late Queen’s eldest son, King Charles, has ascended the throne by replacing his mother who is the longest-serving British monarch of the United Kingdom. Thus, all eyes will be on the King’s Coronation to be held tomorrow in a grand manner.

The current Formula 1 grid has three racers hailing from the United Kingdom–Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris. While the latter two are still very young, and only in their formative stages in F1, Hamilton is a seven-time F1 World Champion. With immense pride from his accomplishments, King Charles had bestowed the honor of a Knighthood to the Mercedes racer in 2021. Thus, fans wondered if Sir Lewis Hamilton has been invited for the King’s Coronation, and whether he will attend it.

Since the Coronation has coincided with the Miami Grand Prix event, Lewis Hamilton will have to skip the ceremony. But when asked by Ted Kravitz whether he had received an invitation, the Briton seemed at a loss for words. Then, he admitted, “I have no idea. I have no idea. I don’t see my mail. I’ve not seen my mail in years.”

Before Lewis Hamilton became a worldwide phenomenon as the only F1 racer to have matched Michael Schumacher’s feat of winning seven World Championships, he had met King Charles at the age of 12. At that time, young Lewis had proven himself to be a karting prodigy, and had gotten an opportunity to meet the monarch. Recollecting the event, Lewis Hamilton said, “When I had signed into 1997 and then I went to McLaren, Prince Charles came to open up the factory.”

Lewis continued, “And that day I remember having my go-kart and I was sitting there, and Prince Charles knelt down next to me and spoke to me. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m Lewis Hamilton. One day, I want to be a Formula 1 champion. When I stood up [after being knighted in 2021], he’s like, ‘It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you. You’ve come a long way.

While Lewis has indeed come a long way, he has many more miles to go. The Briton is currently gearing up for the second edition of the Miami Grand Prix which will be held this weekend. Should Lewis perform well to grab his second podium finish of this season, he will have a chance to surpass Fernando Alonso and get into the top-3 spot in the Drivers’ Standings.
