Mercedes has had an abysmal start to the 2022 F1 Championship season, after the FIA decided to change the rules a bit to put an end to the turbo-hybrid era of Formula 1. For a team that has won eight consecutive Constructors’ Championship titles in the turbo-hybrid era of F1, Mercedes’ performance in this new season has made everyone upset with the Stuttgart-based outfit.
While Mercedes had been experiencing several problems with porpoising, with their race pace and their qualifying pace as their W13 is simply not fast enough to compete with the cars of the rival teams like Ferrari’s F1-75 and Red Bull’s RB-18, the team promised they would improve upon their situation with some changes to the cars.
While Mercedes never got back to the position they were in, in the previous seasons, the team has still made some progress in correcting the errors in their car. With the upgraded car, Merc newcomer George Russell has shown a spectacular performance as the Briton has already scored two podium places in the seven races that have happened till now.
With Mercedes’ current progression in 2022, it is becoming clear that they might not be able to bridge the points gap between them and Ferrari and Red Bull anymore. So, Toto Wolff was asked if they are focusing on their car for the next season right now, and the Austrian talked about that possibility.

Toto Wolff says focusing on next year’s car is not on the cards right now

According to Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff, their team has not yet totally given up on the current season, and are trying to get the most out of their car to push for a Championship win. Thus, he does not believe now is the time for the team to focus on next year’s car completely as it has only been seven races in this season, and a lot can still change in the points table if Mercedes chances upon the perfect updates for their car.
Speaking on this discussion, Toto Wolff said, “If you want to change a concept, you have to understand what will make a new concept faster than the current one. I think if we knew that, we would have done it already.”
This means that Toto Wolff will not be in favor of his team focusing on next year’s car as long as they do not figure out the full capabilities of their car in this current season. He also said, “Everything that can’t be changed on the current car has to be revised.”
