Lewis Hamilton‘s bombshell move to Ferrari has been set in stone ahead of the commencement of the 2024 season. However, Toto Wolff is yet to finalize the driver to follow in the footsteps of the seven-time world champion at Brackley. Hence, former F1 driver Christian Danner has put forth Fernando Alonso as a potential candidate for the team.
Fernando Alonso has been in the sport for almost 23 years in 2024. The Asturian has the most amount of experience as a driver on the current Formula 1 grid. The driver hasn’t been out of his prime yet as he scored remarkable results in the previous season. Hence, Danner felt that the 42-year-old would be the best fit for the empty spot at Mercedes from the 2025 season.
The 65-year-old asserted that Fernando Alonso was just a call away from Toto Wolff. Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin would end by the culmination of the 2024 season. Additionally, the Spaniard hasn’t confirmed his contract extension with his current racing team in Formula 1. Hence, Alonso also broke the silence over the rumors as he wants to keep his options open for the 2025 season.
Toto Wolff would just have to call him (Fernando Alonso) and he would be there.Danner told MARCA.
Fernando Alonso has no plans of retiring anytime soon
The 42-year-old has been racing in Formula 1 ever since 2001. Alonso hasn’t looked back ever since except for a short break in 2020. However, multiple people questioned the two-time world champion’s retirement plans from the sport. Regardless, the Asturian has no plans of retiring anytime soon.
Alonso hasn’t been past his prime as he was scoring great results within Aston Martin in 2023 and scored multiple podiums. The 42-year-old added that he was motivated and performing well and hence could race for a few more years. The Spaniard further claimed that he could race in Formula 1 till he was at least 50 years old.
Hence, the team prepares for the challenges in the upcoming season. The Silverstone-based team had multiple issues down the season and couldn’t cling to their constructors’ championship position towards the end. Hence, the season wasn’t the best for the team as they could score better results in Formula 1.
