“I’d still have been complaining,” Ex-Red Bull driver praises Lewis Hamilton for his maturity after losing the F1 world title to Max Verstappen
David Coluthard and Lewis Hamilton
David Coulthard and Lewis Hamilton are veterans of the sport who have pretty much experienced everything there is in the pinnacle of motorsport. Both the drivers have faced Victory and Defeat in their eras of racing. The only difference between the two is the former not having any world titles to himself while Lewis has won 7 F1 world driver’s championships.
David Coulthard was of the opinion that great racers will always respect each other’s victories even when there seems to be unfairness in the race. During an interview on Tiktok, the Red Bull driver went on to use Lewis Hamilton as the perfect example for his answer. Lewis had to go through a lot of pain and agony when the final title deciding race of the 2021 season took place in Abu Dhabi.
The 7 time world champion was comfortably leading the race during the ending stages and it looked like he was gonna win the race and the championship. However, a late safety car brought out by Nicolas Latifi destroyed his chances of winning the race. A slight error by race director Michael Masi led to the rules not being followed efficiently which gave Max an advantage over Lewis Hamilton.

David Coulthard has a massive amount of respect for Lewis Hamilton
Here is what he said about the 7 time world champion during the interview. “When he was younger it would’ve been more difficult to do that,” says Coulthard, who himself would have reacted differently. “I’d still have been complaining.” It was clear that a moment like this could make or break any athlete mentally but Lewis Hamilton accepted defeat graciously to the surprise of many.
David further talked about Lewis and stated that he isn’t surprised by his behaviour. “With age comes maturity. The benefit of youth is you don’t know, you don’t know. You’re not scared of anything. As you get older you start to understand the consequences, the maturity enables you to deal with different situations,” he concluded.
Lewis Hamilton will be racing again in 2023 where he is partnered up with George Russell. Having gone through a horrid year last season, Lewis and the team will be adamant on bouncing back. With there being a slight change in the regulations for the upcoming season, it could be an advantage for Mercedes who seemed to suffer a lot from porpoising issues.
