F1 and FIA are gearing up for controversial rule change that Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have already criticized
Pirelli and the FIA are joining hands to bring about a change in the tire supply structure for Formula 1 for the future seasons.
The last few years in Formula 1 have seen an upheaval in the regulations that have favored some of the racers and been a problem for others. Some rules, such as the ones introduced last year, have been heavily criticized by the participating F1 teams. The changes from 2022 led to porpoising problems that literally affected the physical health of some racers like Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes’ repeated urge finally resulted in the FIA giving a directive to do away with porpoising so that the drivers do not experience back pain.
When tire supply in F1 is discussed, Pirelli’s long-term association with Formula 1 is something that can hardly be ignored. The Italian company, headed by CEO Mario Isola, have come up with innovative methods to aid the competition in F1 by increasing the grip and race pace of the tires. Usually, Pirelli supplies a set number of tires of different configurations to the teams for each race weekend. Now, the FIA are thinking about adding another change to the current rules about tires.
FIA are reportedly in talks with Pirelli on implementing the Alternative Tyre Allocation (ATA) on a permanent basis in the future races. They had already tried it for the Dutch Grand Prix as well as the Italian Grand Prix which were held in the last couple of weeks. The experiment, in the FIA’s opinions, was successful but Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had other things to say about it.

Lewis Hamilton did not have nice things to say about FIA’s new plan for tires in F1
Any change proposed for Formula 1 by the FIA does not get implemented overnight as they have to be approved by many parties concerned. And for that, the rules are used at some of the races as an experiment to see the outcome. When the ATA rule was used at the Dutch GP, Lewis Hamilton said, “We only had one tyre that we were going to use this session. Not really a great format this change that they made for this weekend, it just means we get less running.“
On the other hand, Formula 1 has brought in several rules to take a step towards inclusivity too. Gone are the days when it was viewed as an elitist European sport reserved for the Whites–now, they are planning to welcome women racers and racers of color and Blacks too. Thus, the F1 Academy has been kickstarted to promote female racers, and there have also been initiatives like the Lewis Hamilton Foundation to inspire the younger Blacks to enter the king class of motorsports.
