The Japanese Grand Prix qualis saw Red Bull driver Max Verstappen grab his fifth pole position of the season by stepping it up after his disappointing results in the previous Qualifying Session ahead of the Singapore GP. And proving the predictions of many F1 pundits wrong, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who holds the record for the most number of pole positions this year, failed to increase his count in the Suzuka Circuit. But then the F1 official Twitter account disclosed some staggering statistics about the gap between Verstappen and Leclerc!
Apparently, there was a huge chance that the tables would have been turned on Max Verstappen as Charles Leclerc could have very well gotten the P1 position at the Japanese Grand Prix Qualifying today. The time gap between the two racers was only 0.010 seconds in the Q3 segment of Saturday’s qualis. This is a record for this year as it is the narrowest gap between the pole sitter and the P2 racer in a Qualifying Session amongst all the Grands Prix that have been held till now. And it ranks fourth in the list of narrowest gaps between the top two racers in a Qualifying of all time.

While announcing this record by Max Verstappen and his closest title rival of this year Charles Leclerc, the admins of F1’s official Twitter handle found a rather creative way to break the news. They used Yuki Tsunoda’s height as a unit of measurement for the slight gap that separated the Red Bull racer from the Monegasque in the Japanese GP Qualifying.
Max Verstappen steps on the gas pedal for earning his second World Championship title in Suzuka

There is a big chance that Max Verstappen might win his second F1 World title in the Main Race at the Suzuka International Racing Circuit. Even his team advisor, Dr Helmut Marko, said he would rather the Dutchman grabs his second title in the Japanese Grand Prix as that would favor Honda, their engine partner. And while Max has been on the losing end of the record for pole positions with only four poles as opposed to Charles Leclerc‘s 9 pole positions, he did improve his pace to score the topmost starting position for Sunday’s race at Suzuka.
And by the looks of the details that were posted on the official Twitter wall of Formula 1, it appears that the fight is becoming all the fiercer as the gap between the racers in the Qualifying is almost negligible. Only 0.01 seconds separate Verstappen and Leclerc, while P3 finisher Carlos Sainz was just 0.57 seconds away from the Dutchman. And the distance between the top 2 racers can be estimated to be 0.75 m–which is, according to the post, “0.47 Yuki Tsunodas” long.

Now that he successfully placed himself at the front of the starting line for the Japanese GP, it is to be seen if Max Verstappen manages to get the point for the fastest lap alongwith the race win at Suzuka. If he achieves these two feats, then the F1 2022 World Championship will be his by tomorrow.
