Sergio Perez is set to start the Saudi Arabian GP in pole position. This puts him in the unique position of having taken all of his (2) pole positions at the same track. He ended qualifying on top with a time of 1:28.265, with only Charles Leclerc coming somewhat close, as he was +0.155 behind. But it’s fair to say that the Mexican probably had a bit of performance in hand because he didn’t really go for a final run in Q3.
But there might be a bit of a problem, as Red Bull mechanics have been spotted working on Perez’s car, just hours before the race. They were working on the rear of the car with the engine started, according to Albert Fabrega. This was the situation some 2 hours and 20 minutes before race start. This has prompted a lot of concern, even though there’s no real clarity on the situation.
Half an hour later, it was the same case. It’s possible that it might be related to the issue Max Verstappen had in qualifying, where he retired from a driveshaft issue. The Dutchman has changed his gearbox for the race within the allocation and will be using the same one as in Bahrain. The fact that the mechanics looked in a rush would certainly not help ease fans’ fears.
UPDATE: According to Julianne Cerasoli, Perez said that the “work” going on is just a check on the car, after what had happened to Verstappen.
