Fans’ crazy conspiracy theory explains Max Verstappen’s MASSIVE gap to Sergio Perez, blames it on Red Bull’s attempt at deceiving FIA
There are some suspicions that Red Bull are deliberately giving Sergio Perez a 'limited' car to escape the FIA's scrutiny.
The Formula One circuit returned to action after a three-week-long summer break for the Dutch Grand Prix. As the entire paddock got busy in preparation for reigning World Champion Max Verstappen‘s home GP, the build-up to Sunday’s race turned out to be an eventful one. During the second Free Practice on Friday, Daniel Ricciardo met with a terrible accident on the tracks following his contact with Oscar Piastri‘s McLaren.
In the same Free Practice, Red Bull driver Sergio Perez clocked 29 laps, which was three laps more than his teammate Max Verstappen. Even then, the Mexican was over 0.4 seconds away from the Dutch lion. And this speed difference only magnified when the two racers made their way to the Main Race at Zandvoort on Sunday.
As rainy conditions arrived during the Dutch Grand Prix, Perez was one of the first ones to put for slicks. This gave him a massive advantage over Max, who got his slicks on a bit later. At one point, Sergio Perez was leading the pack and it looked like he was all-set to break Verstappen’s back-to-back race-winning streak.
But then, Max started clocking laps which were a full second faster than Checo’s laps and he overtook Checo in no time. In the end, Verstappen was crowned the winner of the Dutch GP with 10 second-gap to Perez. And now, fans have a wild theory as to why there is such a massive pace difference between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Fans believe Sergio Perez’s slow pace is a kind of defence mechanism for Red Bull
While Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are recruited under the same team, it has been seen time and again that Max has a far better performance in his RB-19 than Checo. To improve upon his pace, the Mexican even logged extra hours at the Red Bull headquarters during the summer break while Max was lounging with Kelly Piquet on his Mediterranean trip. But even then, the Dutch Grand Prix saw Checo finish 10.068 seconds behind his teammate.
Now, one of the fans have said that the reason behind Sergio Perez’s poor performance as compared to Max is that the Mexican has a more ‘limited’ version of the RB-19. Thus, if the FIA ever investigate whether some illegal speed-boosting mechanisms have been used in Red Bull’s RB-19, the Austrian team can show them Perez’s car which does not have the same augmentations that Max’s car does.
In the end, there is some grave disparity between Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen’s card that has caught the eye of the fans. Perez himself is an exceptionally skilled driver who put his Racing Point car in P1 to win the Sakhir GP 2020. Hence, it is not like Sergio Perez lacks the qualities of a perfect racer but Red Bull is failing him time and again with their car.
