Fed up and unmotivated Lewis Hamilton has become a ‘spoiled little boy’, claims former Ferrari F1 boss
Former F1 manager Joan Villadelprat had some ruthless remarks on Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time World Champion seems to have lost his motivation for winning races.
Ever since his winless season last year, Lewis Hamilton has come under the radar for several critics who have claimed that the seven-time World Champion has lost his mojo. Now, former F1 team manager Joan Villadelprat, who made himself a name in the motorsports industry for his roles at Ferrari and McLaren, made some ruthless remarks on Lewis Hamilton‘s waning prowess behind the wheels. Although he never indicated that the Briton has lost his driving skills, he did say that the 38-year-old is lacking motivation, and that is why he is not yielding good results like he did before.
With seven World titles to take credit for, and 103 race wins in total, Lewis Hamilton is arguably one of the best F1 racers of his generation, and he can easily be touted as Formula 1’s golden boy. But the last time he had been up on the podium with the trophy for winning a Grand Prix in his hands was back in 2021. Even then, he had lost his neck and neck fight against Max Verstappen at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, thus losing his chance to surpass Michael Schumacher‘s count of seven F1 Championship wins.
After the duel of 2021, many F1 pundits thought Lewis would retire while his career was still on a high, but the Mercedes racer wanted to keep going. Till now, he has not gotten a single Grand Prix victory while his much younger teammate George Russell overtook him in the F1 2022 standings with ease. Commenting on this, Joan Villadelprat said, “Hamilton is fed up and, if he doesn’t win, he’s like a spoiled little boy: you either win or you break the toys.”
Joan Villadelprat believes Lewis Hamilton does not have the same hunger for winning anymore
In 2007, when half the racers on the current F1 grid were still winning karting championships, Lewis Hamilton made his debut and got his first Grand Prix win as well. Till 2022, he never had a season where he did not attain victory at any one of the races. But that winning streak came to an end last year because of several factors.
And according to Villadelprat, Lewis himself should take majority of the blame instead of being a “whiner” about it. He said, “He’s a whiner, you know. The tyres, the strategy, he questions everything, and he has screwed up. I think he hasn’t lost but, after seven titles. What motivates you? Well, win another. And you’re not going to risk your skin if you don’t have that car.”
Thus, Joan Villadelprat believes Lewis Hamilton is playing it safe as he does not have a Championship-winning car from Mercedes at the moment, and he is not willing to take risks. But on the other hand, George Russell is prepared to go all in for his World Championship win in the next few seasons. Now, it remains to be seen which one of the Merc drivers manages to bring the trophy home first–George Russell eyeing his debut Championship or Lewis Hamilton targeting his record-breaking eighth title.
