Fernando Alonso and Renault have shared a lot of history together. The Spaniard has won his two world championships with the team back in 2005 and 2006. Ever since then, everything seems to have changed at the Enstone based squad. After leaving the sport in 2018, a comeback from the champ was not expected. Back in 2021 Alpine (formerly known as Renault) signed the Spaniard to replace outgoing Daniel Ricciardo.
Fernando Alonso and Alpine’s reunion brought good results for the team as the Spaniard also got a podium for the squad in Qatar. However, 2022 was a different ballgame altogether. Fernando has signed with Alpine on a 2 year deal which would end in 2022 awaiting renewal for 2023. Fernando revealed that the whole process was very slow and ultimately not worth the efforts for a one year deal. The way Otmar Szafnauer handled things was also not favourable for the Spaniard.
In an interview, here is what he had to say about Alpine and Otmar Szafnauer. “It is the way they do things. Or the way Otmar does things. Because after this year, he should be quiet. He should not talk at all. After the results of Aston Martin and the results he’s achieving, he’s still talking and still proud of the decision, which is incredible, amazing,” the Aston Martin driver stated.
Otmar Szafnauer has been sacked by Alpine following the 2023 Belgian GP

Otmar Szafnauer had left Aston Martin to join Alpine a while ago thinking that his previous team was a sinking boat. Alas, the tides did turn as Aston Martin made a comeback in 2023 with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll at the helm. Drama had reached its peak at Alpine last weekend when team principal Otmar Szafnauer and long-serving Sporting Director Alan Permane were fired from the team.
Chief Technical Officer Pat Fry was also announced as the next person who is leaving. Pat got a role with Williams racing. Amidst all the drama, Esteban Ocon managed to bring his Alpine to 8th place in Sunday’s race. However, It has become clear as to what the managerial situation is at Alpine. It will be interesting to see how the Enstone based squad recovers form this blow.
