Fernando Alonso has finally found himself with competitive machinery in 2023. The Spanish driver has scored four podiums in the first five races of the season. Alonso joined Aston Martin for the 2023 F1 season and the results have impressed many. However, the Silverstone-based team is still too far away from Red Bull to bag a race victory. F1 pundit Glenn Freeman believes that the 41-year-old must learn from Max Verstappen.
Freeman highlighted that the reigning world champion has been in a similar situation. The Dutchman was the only threat to Mercedes during the last couple of seasons with the previous set of regulations. Even Max Verstappen himself has found similarities with Alonso’s present situation as the 41-year-old awaits his 33rd F1 victory.
Glenn mentioned that Verstappen remained behind Mercedes, especially during the 2020 season. The 25-year-old waited for things to go down at the Silver Arrows and capitalized on such issues to win a Grand Prix. Subsequently, the F1 pundit reckoned that now the task is on Fernando Alonso to take up a similar role to what Max had at that point. He said, “The challenge is on Fernando to be the guy that day who is there to benefit.”

Red Bull’s troubles could open the door for Fernando Alonso to win a race
The 2023 F1 season is the longest in the sport’s history with 23 races on the calendar. Glenn Freeman believed that no team in F1 is invincible, including Red Bull. There can be a couple of races this year where the Milton-Keynes team suffers from problems. Verstappen himself has stated that this is a possibility, Christian Horner‘s team
As such, this can allow Fernando Alonso to win a race this season. The 41-year-old last won a GP in F1 10 years ago at his home race in Spain. Subsequently, it is no wonder that the Spanish driver is hungry to finally be on the top step of the pinnacle of motorsport once again. Aston Martin has given Alonso the best chance to win a race since then.
Thus, Glenn Freeman insists that it is time for Fernando Alonso to take a page out of Max Verstappen’s playbook to win a GP again. The Spanish driver has finished P3 four times this season with his sights on that first place. Although it remains to be seen how long Alonso will have to wait till he can finally get the chance to capitalize on Red Bull’s troubles for a race win.
