Fernando Alonso, the 2-time F1 World Champion, recently sat down to have a candid conversation. The Spaniard has made it known that, according to him, his toughest rival at the pinnacle of motor racing, was none other than the former 7-time F1 World Champion, Michael Schumacher. The duo had epic battles during their time together in the sport.

When Fernando Alonso, during his recent interview, was asked to talk about his toughest F1 rival, he said, “Difficult to pick one, because I think all of them were great rivals and great talented drivers as well. But I don’t know, because when I got to the sport, Michael Schumacher was dominating the races and everything.”

He further added, “Probably that fight with him. Still you know the one that I will pick always. Fighting with Michael was always special, so yeah, I will say that one.” Alonso has made it crystal clear that his greatest rival was not Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, but the Ferrari legend, Michael Schumacher. Moreover, while talking about his battles with Schumacher, the Spaniard indicated the time when the German was the top dog in the sport, and he was an upcoming racing driver.

Taking into account the accolades that Michael Schumacher amassed as an F1 racing driver, it is totally understandable as to why Fernando Alonso has picked Schumacher as the driver who he feels was the toughest to hang with. When the German was in his prime years, he scored race victories for fun and was able to cement his legacy as one of the best drivers to ever step foot in F1.

While Michael Schumacher retired from the sport a long time ago, Alonso, at the age of 41, is taking on the challenges of the pinnacle of motor racing on a regular basis. Moreover, this year he has been racing like a beast unleashed, he has looked extremely strong in his AMR23 and has so far amassed 45 points in the first three races of the season.

There are still 20 races remaining in the 2023 F1 calendar. Suppose Aston Martin is somehow able to keep developing its car throughout the campaign. In that case, he might really have an opportunity of securing his third World Championship that has eluded him so far. However, Fernando Alonso has a mighty wall standing in front of him in the name of the reigning World Champion, Max Verstappen.

Since winning his first title in 2021, the Dutchman has been at the top of his game and has looked incredibly strong in the first three races of the season. Moreover, Red Bull’s RB19 has looked like the real deal so far, and in the hands of Verstappen, it becomes a lethal weapon. Considering everything, would Fernando Alonso be able to win his third F1 World Championship this year?
