Fernando Alonso is still one of the finest drivers on the F1 grid. The Spanish is a two-time world champion but has failed to win a race for almost a decade. The 41-year-old is reckoned as one of the most talented drivers in the paddock with some consistent performances. Former F1 world champion Damon Hill insists that the Spaniard has proved his talent over the years.

On the retirement of the two-time champion, Hill stated, “I think he can go out on a high, can’t he?” The 62-year-old believed that even if Alonso failed to win a third world championship, the 41-year-old could tell the critics that his potential was unrealized. The 41-year-old spent several years in underwhelming machinery, including his infamous second stint at McLaren.

Damon Hill reckoned that Fernando himself was aware of this scenario. Subsequently, the Spanish driver made peace with his situation as he consistently tried to get the best results. Alonso firmly believes that he still has what it takes to win at the pinnacle of motorsport. Unfortunately, the two-time world champion still awaits his 33rd win this season.

The former Williams driver insisted that the discussion over Fernando Alonso’s legacy is made as if the Spaniard is about to retire. Although Damon highlighted the possibility of the two-time champion continuing in the sport at the age of 45. Hill said, “We talk about him like he is about to retire but he might keep going until he is well over 45.”

Fernando is having a delightful season in 2023 so far. The Spanish driver has achieved four podiums in the first five races this year, being the only regular driver on the podium apart from Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. The 41-year-old has insisted on feeling at the top of his game. So much so that Alonso believes he is quicker now than when he made his F1 debut with Minardi.

Thus, Damon Hill believes Fernando Alonso will have a one-of-a-kind legacy in F1. The two-time world champion will have his head high when he retires as the Spanish driver has proved to the critics to be one of the better drivers in history, Although it remains to be seen if the 41-year-old decides to leave F1 for a second time before winning a third title.
