Fernando Alonso has impressed many in the paddock in the 2023 F1 season so far. After his podium in the opening race of the season, all the critics who were displeased with Alonso’s move to Aston Martin were shut down. Since then, the Spaniard had gone onto achieve five more podiums with the latest one being in last weekend’s Canadian GP. However, there was a slight chance that he could push for more if it wasn’t for an issue in the car.

Fernando Alonso had previously qualified P2 at the Canadian GP last year when he was racing with Alpine. It was clear that the Spaniard wasn’t going to settle for anything less. In a dramatic rain guzzling qualifying, Alonso went on impress with a performance worthy of P3. Meanwhile teammate Lance Stroll spun and almost damaged the car and wasn’t able to get into Q3. After multiple grid penalties were imposed for speeding, Nico Hulkenberg in P2 was demoted.

This meant that Alonso was right back in the mix as he started from the front row alongside Max Verstappen. Alonso was behind Lewis Hamilton until Lap 22 where he went past the Mercedes driver. However, he was told by the team to lift and coast in the ending stages of the race which led to Lewis etching closer to him. Alonso revealed that the team didn’t tell him what the problem was in his car.

In an interview, here is what he had to say. “They didn’t tell me so maybe it was not to make me worried,” Alonso explained.
“The car was okay, I was just following the instructions so yeah hopefully it means we had a bit more pace [in hand] so at the next race [in Austria] we can put a bit more pressure on Max.We were hoping to challenge Red Bull a bit more, we lost a place at the start with Lewis, it was a battle with the Mercedes and we were pushing all the race,”
be stated.

Nevertheless, Fernando Alonso still managed to hold off Lewis Hamilton as he went on to finish P2 in the race. While Max Verstappen won the race and equalled Ayrton Senna’s win record, Alonso seemed more optimistic as he knew that he had even more pace to challenge Max if it wasn’t for the issue. It will be interesting to see how the next few races go by. The Spaniard is here to win and will do everything in order to do so.
