Former F1 racer reckons lack of job security as the Ferrari Team Principal will be the main factor holding Frederic Vasseur back

Despite Ferrari being one of the oldest and most powerful Formula 1 teams in the history of the sport, the Tifosis have not seen a single World Constructors’ Championship brought home to the Maranello outfit since 2008. Suffering from a dry patch that has spanned 15 years, the Scuderia are now hungry for a win–and thus, they have decided to try a different approach to achieve their goal.

In 2022, the Scuderia Ferrari came out with a powerful racecar–the F1-75–which made Charles Leclerc emerge as the early favorite for winning the Drivers’ Championship while Ferrari looked all set to get their World Constructors’ title. But unfortunately for the team, they had a few flaws with regards to tactics and reliability, which finally made them fail to measure up to the mighty Austrian squad of Red Bull Racing as Christian Horner’s team took away the much-coveted title.

Since Ferrari had to settle for the second spot in the Championship in 2022 and it was clear that some things needed to be changed before they could get back to their winning ways. Thus, the situation at the Ferrari headquarters in Maranello worsened as the team executives wanted to change the leadership, and amidst all this tension, their existing Team Principal Mattia Binotto decided to give up his position. And weeks later, it was announced that former Alfa Romeo Chief Frederic Vasseur would be taking Binotto’s place.

Juan Pablo Montoya believes Frederic Vasseur’s position is not sturdy while Wolff’s and Horner’s are

Frederic Vasseur

According to former F1 racer Juan Pablo Montoya, Frederic Vasseur will be working under a lot of pressure right now. He was appointed for the role of the Team Principal for the oldest and most successful team in F1 at a time of crisis, and judging from the way Mattia Binotto left the position, it is true that there is not much job security in Ferrari. Thus, Frederic Vasseur will be operating with caution as he will not want to make the Executives unsatisfied with him.

Montoya said, “Everybody is waiting for you to put your foot in the wrong place, so they can fire you. That’s what I see from the outside. You look at Toto [Wolff] and you know Toto is not going anywhere. You look at Christian [Horner] or you look at Helmut [Marko], they are not going anywhere. But you always look at the head of Ferrari and you are wondering: ‘Okay, how long is this one going to last?’ Because there is always somebody after him.

It is only a matter of a few weeks before the all-new season of Formula 1 kicks off with a massive start in Bahrain. Last year, it was in this Grand Prix that Ferrari managed to make their mark and wow all their fans by getting a 1-2 finish for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. But in the end, they still could not come up at the top of the Championship table. Now, it remains to be seen if the Italian team manages to turn the table and see their way to the P1 position in the Championship standings in 2023.
