Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne
In motorsports , there are drivers that retire due to their age and then come drivers that retire only after they feel that the excitement has vanished . Fernando Alonso comes in the second category. Formula 1 is a sport that keeps getting more and more complicated as a driver ages. The Spaniard however remains unaffected by the changes happening around him.
Fernando Alonso used to be teammates in Formula 1 at McLaren with Stoffel Vandoorne. The Spaniard left McLaren and Formula 1 in 2018 as he announced his retirement. However, the two-time world champion came back to the sport with the team that he had won his titles with(Alpine, formerly known as Renault). Fast forward to 2023, Fernando has switch teams as he joined Aston Martin.
It seems like fate brought the two former teammates back together as Stoffel Vandoorne joined Aston Martin as their reserve driver. Stoffel went on to talk about his former teammate for whom he had a lot of praise. He noticed that Fernando still has the will to extract every single bit of performance from the car. Even at his age, the results that he is bringing in are extraordinary.
Stoffel Vandoorne praises Fernando Alonso for his dedication

In an interview with Marca, Stoffel took Fernando Alonso as an example to describe his own career. “I have worked with world champions in Formula 1,” Vandoorne began. “To see Fernando still fighting for points at the highest level is a great motivation for me. He is a person I can learn a lot from” he said as he went on to shower praise towards his current teammate at Aston Martin F1.
While Stoffel Vandoorne races for DS Penske in Formula E, the racer is still hoping for a return to the pinnacle of motorsport in the coming years. However, his main focus now lies with Formula E. “As a driver, you can only focus on what is in front of you and right now I am going to do everything I can to defend my world title in Formula E with my new team: DS Penske,” he concluded.
While Stoffel Vandoorne embarks on his new challenge, in Formula E, he will also be helping Aston Martin with their F1 operations for the 2023 season. As he is united again with Fernando Alonso, it will be interesting to see how they work together in order to help move the team forward ahead of the upcoming F1 season. It’s all to play for in 2023 with Aston’s heavy investment into it’s assets and drivers.
