George Russell breaks silence on why he has chose ’63’ as his F1 race number
George Russell has revealed it to his fans why he chose 63 as his racing number.
Mercedes racer George Russell has evidently come across massive success ever since his debut with the Stuttgart outfit. He outscored his childhood idol Lewis Hamilton in the same car last year, and was also Mercedes’ only racer to get a Grand Prix victory in 2022. The Briton has been the centre of widespread attention thanks to his amazing story of climbing up the ranks from a seat at Williams to becoming the teammate to the seven-time World Championship-winning racer Lewis Hamilton.
In 2019, when George Russell won the Formula 2 Championship, he was fixated on entering F1. Thus, he gave an actual PowerPoint presentation to Claire Williams and her team, convincing them to take him up as their new recruit beside Robert Kubica. During his tenure at the legendary team, Russell showed exemplary skills which came to the notice of Mercedes chief Toto Wolff. In 2020, he stepped in for Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix and came very close to winning the race.
Looking back on his long journey in Formula 1, George Russell recently talked about the race number that he picked before his debut at the king class of motorsports. His fans have wondered many a times why the #63 driver carries those digits on his back, and now, Russell has an answer for all of them.

George Russell’s F1 race number is actually a moving tribute to his brother
As the F1 summer break is currently underway, the fans are missing the weekend Grands Prix awfully. But for keeping them entertained, the teams are coming out with new YouTube videos every now and then. In one such video, George Russell talked about choosing his F1 racing number. He said, “Well, I am number 63 because that was the number my brother used to race with when he was in go karting. When he started, that was the number that was assigned to him and has been a family number ever since. So, [it’s] in the family.”
While the F1 circus is not scheduled to reunite until the Dutch Grand Prix arrives in a few weeks, George Russell has been enjoying the time away from the tracks. He recently shared a picture from a Martin Garrix concert which he visited with girlfriend Carmen Mundt. He shared the news that he met with Daniel Ricciardo and his ladylove Heidi Berger.
