The 2021 F1 title fight between Hamilton and Verstappen is regarded as one of the best championship battles in the sport’s history. The two drivers went head-to-head throughout the entire season with multiple controversial incidents including the British GP as well as the Italian GP. In the end, it was Max Verstappen who emerged victorious at the dramatic season finale in Abu Dhabi.

However, with the new ground-effect F1 regulations, Mercedes have fallen way behind Red Bull. While Verstappen went on to dominate the 2022 season with an unprecedented 17 race victories, Hamiton failed to win a single Grand Prix. Although the Silver Arrows have been bringing extensive updates this season that could potentially allow the 7-time world champion to challenge the Dutch driver for victory soon.

Thus, Gunther Steiner did not even hesitate to pick Max Verstappen in front of Lewis Hamilton. The Haas team boss was adamant that the two-time world champion is currently in a great stage of his career with skill and luck. This serves as the reason for Steiner to choose the Dutch driver rather than the 7-time world champion in this rivalry.
