“He wasn’t always that saintly”: Martin Brundle looks back at Sebastian Vettel’s initial years in Formula 1
From 2007 to 2022, Sebastian Vettel‘s 15-year-long career in Formula 1 has seen many phases of the German racer who hung up his F1 overalls after having a go at the Abu Dhabi GP for the last time. While only some people in the F1 paddock have been witness to all of Vettel’s years in the pinnacle of motorsports, Sky Sports F1 presenter Martin Brundle is one of the lucky few who got to see the four-time World Champion up close.
During Sebastian Vettel’s farewell last week at the end of the Abu Dhabi GP, all of his colleagues came together to bid adieu to the racer who has been known as one of the most compassionate, understanding and idealistic persons in the F1 paddock. But in Martin Brundle’s words, Seb has undergone massive character evolution while in Formula 1. He mentioned that Vettel was very competitive and “selfish” in his earlier years in F1, but later, he grew into a more compassionate driver.
Sebastian Vettel’s career in Formula 1 has been so long that most of his friends from his earlier days in the sport are no longer active drivers. But Lewis Hamilton, Seb’s close competitor and one of his oldest friends in motorsports, planned for a giant dinner with all other racers as a gesture of goodbye for Sebastian Vettel. And Hamilton also stressed on how much Seb would be missed, now that he is retiring from F1.

Martin Brundle spills the beans on how competitive Sebastian Vettel was in his younger days
Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from F1 has carved a hole in the hearts of many of his fans, and undoubtedly, it has been one of the biggest headlines in F1 community as everyone is talking about it. And joining the conversation, Martin Brundle gave his take on how Sebastian has grown during his years in the sport. He said, “He wasn’t always that saintly, he was just as feisty, selfish and demanding as you’d expect any four-time world champion to be.”
Sebastian Vettel had made his debut at BMW Sauber in 2007, before switching to Toro Rosso. After spending a year and a half at Toro Rosso, the previous form of today’s AlphaTauri, Seb signed with Red Bull Racing. From 2010 to 2013, he was absolutely invincible, having won four back-to-back World Championships. Now that Seb has stepped down from his role in F1, it remains to be seen if he enters some other sporting league in the near future.
