“It doesn’t change anything,” Helmut Marko talks about the relationship with Honda following their partnership deal with Aston Martin
Dr Helmut Marko has provided insights on the situation at Red Bull following Honda’s shocking announcement.
Dr Helmut Marko
Helmut Marko has been working with Red Bull racing as their team advisor for many years now. During that time period, he has been involved in multiple engine deals taking that Red Bull has done. Whether it is Renault, Ferrari, Honda and now Ford X RBPT. Nevertheless, Honda’s recent announcement had everyone wondering what happened between Red Bull and the Japanese Engine manufacturer.
Honda partnered up with Red Bull from the 2019 F1 season where the team won their first race with the Japanese engine at the Austrian GP. Ever since then, both the parties have enjoyed massive success from their partnership. Red Bull won the 2021 and 2022 drivers championship with Max Verstappen. Apart from that, the Energy drinks squad also won the Constructors championship last year with the help of Sergio Perez.
However, Honda decided to quit F1 a while ago but their priorities have seemingly changed as of now. The Japanese manufacturer will be returning to Formula 1 in 2026 as the official engine supplier for Aston Martin. Until that happens, Honda will be closely working with Red Bull until 2025 to provide engines unofficially. Dr Helmut Marko had a few words to share regarding the whole situation at bay.
Helmut Marko remains unaffected by Honda’s decision to join forces with Aston Martin
In an interview, here is what he said. “It doesn’t change anything for us,” he’s firm. “We made the decision to build our own engine, after Honda said they would stop doing it altogether. They wanted to do that by 2022. In order not to become dependent again, we made that decision then,” he said. “A courageous decision by us, and also an expensive decision. However, Red Bull Powertrains are doing very well right now. We are on schedule. All engines that have already been built are more or less at the level expected,” he continued.
The relationship that Red Bull has with Honda will come to an official end before 2026. The Milton Keynes based squad has established RBPT (Red Bull Powertrains) where they will be manufacturing engines in partnership with Ford. This will start from 2026. Till then all seems to be going well according to Helmut Marko. It will also be interesting to see if Fernando Alonso will be in F1 till 2026 to race with Honda power again.
