“His best contribution was being a Red Bull proxy,” Fans react as Williams announce split with Nicholas Latifi

“His best contribution was being a Red Bull proxy,” Fans react as Williams announce split with Nicholas Latifi

Williams principal engineer, Dave Robson highlighted the reasons for Latifi's struggles.

It seems to be a week of back-to-back team line-up announcements in Formula 1 as Williams have come out with a statement regarding the future of Nicholas Latifi in the team. On Thursday, it was confirmed by AlphaTauri that they will be going ahead with Yuki Tsunoda for their Championship campaign in 2023, but Williams’ report was not that positive. The British team announced they will be parting ways with Canadian racer Nicholas Latifi at the end of the current 2022 season.

Nicholas Latifi had joined F1 with Williams, after being backed by massive sponsors like the Royal Bank of Canada and Sofina Foods. He entered the premier league of motorsports after being placed second in the F2 Championship 2019. However, he could never find similar success when he made the transition to Formula 1. In 2020, he came last in the drivers’ standings with zero points in the bag, and 17th in 2021 with only 7 points.

Thus, Latifi’s exit from Williams is not a surprise for F1 fans. They have actually wondered why he was given the chance to drive for Williams when there were far more talented racers waiting. Finally, Jost Capito’s team has revealed that they will be continuing with a new driver in Latifi’s place in 2023.

Including the current season, Latifi has already spent three years in Formula 1. His improvement has been next to nothing. The racer makes elementary mistakes which has made him an object of ridicule for fans call him “Goatifi”. While the cheerful racer has never let the negativity affect him, it is an undeniable fact that Williams can now choose someone much more adept, like Logan Sargeant, to replace Nicholas Latifi. So, here is what the fans have to say about this–

Some of the fans even mentioned Nicholas’ nickname as they bid him a final goodbye from F1.

And finally, some of the fans let out their rage for Nicholas Latifi as he was the one who set off a chain of events in Abu Dhabi in 2021, causing Max Verstappen to win over Lewis Hamilton. It was Latifi’s crash that had brought out the safety car, and the rest is history.

It is quite apparent that fans believe the executives presiding over Williams have made the right decision to sack Nicholas Latifi and appoint a fresh racer. While nothing is certain as yet, there has been some noise about Logan Sargeant being in the sidelines, waiting for a call from Williams. Maybe, in a few weeks time, one could get a confirmation.
